The LEGO Game Boy is no longer a leak: set 72046 was officially announced in July 2025 and launched on October 1, 2025. It is a 421-piece, near 1:1-scale display replica with interchangeable brick-built cartridges and screen options—not a working handheld. Compared with newer gaming-themed LEGO builds, its defining trade-off is fidelity and compact display appeal over interactive mechanisms.
What is the LEGO Game Boy set?
LEGO set 72046 recreates the original Nintendo Game Boy as a display model for builders ages 18 and up. The LEGO Group announced it on July 23, 2025, and said it would go on sale October 1, 2025. Nintendo also confirmed the launch timing and availability channels in its July 23, 2025 announcement.
The build has 421 pieces and measures over 5.5 inches (14 cm) high, 3.5 inches (9 cm) wide and 1 inch (3 cm) deep. LEGO describes it as a near 1:1-scale replica. Its controls and details include the +Control Pad, A and B buttons, SELECT and START buttons, a contrast adjustment, a volume dial and a Game Pak slot. See the LEGO product listing for the product description and features.
What comes in the box, and what does the model do?
The set is arranged for display, with a stand and interchangeable brick-built Game Paks representing The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Super Mario Land. It also includes a Nintendo start screen and lenticular screen options corresponding to the games. Those elements let the model evoke different Game Boy displays, but they do not make it a playable device.

LEGO explicitly says there are “no light, sound or display play functions.” The buttons, dial and cartridge slot reproduce the handheld’s appearance; they do not provide gameplay or electronic functions. For someone looking for an actual portable gaming device, the original Nintendo Game Boy is a different kind of product, not an equivalent LEGO alternative.
How does it compare with other LEGO gaming sets?
A useful newer comparison is LEGO PlayStation, which PlayStation introduced in a September 3, 2026 first look. The two builds take different approaches: the Game Boy is a near-size static replica with swappable display pieces, while the PlayStation description highlights working Power and Open button mechanisms, a controller that plugs into the console, and removable game dioramas.

| Comparison point | LEGO Game Boy 72046 | LEGO PlayStation |
|---|---|---|
| Interaction | Static display model; LEGO says it has no light, sound or digital play functions. | PlayStation describes functional Power and Open button mechanisms and a controller that plugs into the console. |
| Scale and dimensions | Near 1:1 scale; over 5.5 × 3.5 × 1 in. (14 × 9 × 3 cm), per LEGO. | Not stated in the cited PlayStation first-look description. |
| Pieces | 421, per LEGO’s 2025 announcement. | Not stated in the cited PlayStation first-look description. |
| Display extras | Two brick-built Game Paks, screen options and a display stand. | Removable game dioramas, according to PlayStation. |
| Price and availability | Launch date: October 1, 2025. Historical launch prices announced by LEGO: $59.99 in the US, €59.99 and £54.99. These are not verified current prices. | Availability timing was announced by PlayStation; price and specific product details are not stated in the cited first-look description. |
The comparison is useful for choosing a style of build, not for declaring one universally better. The Game Boy puts more emphasis on recognizable handheld proportions and interchangeable game-themed details; the PlayStation’s announced features emphasize moving mechanisms and modular display scenes. LEGO’s Game Boy announcement places it among sets for adults, but that category alone does not make unrelated adult gaming sets direct substitutes.

What should you check before buying?
- Choose for display, not gameplay. The 72046 model has no electronic functions; its appeal is the replica design and included display pieces.
- Compare what is actually included. The cartridges, screen options and stand are part of the Game Boy set’s presentation. Other sets may prioritize mechanisms or dioramas instead.
- Verify current price and stock. LEGO’s published figures are historical launch prices, not confirmation of today’s retail price or availability. Check a current retailer or LEGO’s live product listing before purchasing.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
