Yes—images reported in July 2024 showed Jack Black in costume as Steve for A Minecraft Movie. He wore Steve’s blue shirt and jeans and held a pixelated pickaxe, while a Creeper, bee and pink sheep appeared in the same material. The images were never officially authenticated, but reported copyright takedowns make a genuine production leak more likely. The film is no longer upcoming: it was scheduled for April 4, 2025, and The Independent reported that it was in theaters by April 6, 2025.
What the leaked images showed
The July 2024 stills presented Jack Black as the live-action version of Steve, Minecraft’s player character. The reported details were:
- A blue shirt and jeans modeled on Steve’s familiar in-game appearance
- A pixelated pickaxe
- A Creeper in the surrounding scene
- A Minecraft bee
- A pink sheep
Those are observations from the circulated images, not evidence that every surrounding story detail was accurate.

TechSpot, TalkEsport and GamingBible reported that the images were removed from X and Instagram after copyright claims. TechSpot characterized the removals as “all but confirming their authenticity.” That wording is a publication’s assessment, not a statement from Warner Bros., Mojang or the filmmakers.
#1 Best Overall
- Capture the excitement and adventurous play of Minecraft!
- Each 3.25-inch scale Minecraft action figure comes with an accessory to recreate favorite in-game moments!
- Each also includes 1 Redstone Building Piece -- fans can collect the figures and combine all 6 building pieces to build a working TNT Cannon (each sold separately, subject to availability).
- For even more ways to play and display, the pixelated character figures are posable with movable joints!
- The collectible figures make a great toy for video-game players and fans ages 6 years old and up, who will want them all! (Each sold separately, subject to availability.)
Copyright enforcement is consistent with the images being protected production material, so it supports a likely-authenticity inference. It does not establish who uploaded the files, whether every image came from the final cut, or whether the scene changed before release.
What plot information did the leak claim?
TechSpot attributed short story blurbs to a reported marketing “packing guide.” Those blurbs allegedly said that Malgosha captures Steve and that four visitors later rescue him.
Rank #2

- At 4-inch scale, the figures are great for recreating favorite movie scenes or inventing new ones on the go.
- Each character comes with accessories unique to their journey, such as a bow and arrow, a chicken leg or dog collar.
- Collectors and fans can look for Minecraft video game characters like Steve and Creeper, as well as movie friends and foes, to create a unique Overworld adventure!

These are leak claims rather than a confirmed studio synopsis. A packing guide can describe planned promotional material, and production plans can change; the reported blurbs should not be treated as a definitive account of the finished film.
How the two major leaks differ
| Leak | Date | Material | What it can establish | Spoiler level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steve still images | July 2024 | Circulated character and creature images | Reported visual details of Black’s costume, the pickaxe and several Minecraft creatures; takedowns support, but do not prove, authenticity | Low to moderate: visual design, with no verified full scene context |
| Unfinished footage | April 2025 | A rough cut containing incomplete CGI, green screens, title cards and production wires | Shows work-in-progress material, not necessarily the theatrical presentation | Higher: moving footage can expose scene structure, but unfinished effects and edits limit what can be inferred |
The second leak appeared after the movie’s scheduled release date and should not be confused with the earlier still-image leak. Its unfinished elements also make it unreliable for judging final visual effects.

Was A Minecraft Movie still upcoming?
No. The reported release date was April 4, 2025. By April 6, 2025, The Independent described the movie as having opened in theaters, so “upcoming” is now historical wording rather than its current status.

The Independent reported a $57 million first-day opening, projected a $140 million U.S. opening weekend and more than $100 million internationally, and compared those expectations with the $146.4 million domestic opening-weekend record attributed to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The figures are contemporaneous reported or projected numbers, not a final worldwide box-office total.

Critical reaction was sharply mixed. Film critic Clarisse Loughrey wrote: “Unfortunately, A Minecraft Movie proves its own point. Creativity took too much effort. Easier to destroy the spirit of the video game instead.” That is one critic’s response, not a consensus measurement.

How to interpret the leaks
- Separate what is visible from what is inferred: clothing, props and creatures are reported observations; copyright removals support an authenticity inference.
- Treat plot blurbs as provisional: the Malgosha and rescue details were attributed to leaked promotional material, not confirmed as the final synopsis.
- Do not treat unfinished footage as the final movie: green screens, temporary effects and title cards indicate an incomplete cut.
- Use the correct timeline: the stills were a 2024 pre-release leak; the later footage leak circulated in April 2025, after the theatrical release window had begun.
