Layers of Fear (2023) is a bundled, reworked collection—not simply a remake of the 2016 game. It brings together the first Layers of Fear, Layers of Fear 2, their released DLC, and new story chapters, including a Lighthouse chapter designed to connect the separate tales. Its appeal is strongest for players who want an atmospheric, story-led horror anthology in one package; critical reviews differ on whether the presentation and framing make the collection compelling throughout.

What is included in Layers of Fear (2023)?

The 2023 release gathers stories associated with three central figures—the Painter, the Actor, and the Writer—alongside earlier add-on content and new connective material. The official PlayStation listing describes it as a first-person, story-driven experience built around exploration, environmental puzzles, and psychological horror. Its listed components include Inheritance, The Final Note, The Final Prologue, and the Lighthouse chapter. PlayStation Store product description.

That makes “definitive edition” a useful description of the package’s ambition, but “compilation and reworking with added chapters” is clearer about what it is: a way to experience earlier games and additions together, with new framing material, rather than a standalone sequel or a straightforward remake of only the 2016 game.

What kind of horror is it?

The series leans on psychological unease, exploration, changing environments, and environmental puzzles rather than presenting itself as an action-focused horror game. Players move through story spaces shaped by the characters’ perspectives. That approach can suit someone looking for atmosphere and narrative discovery; it may be a weaker match for someone seeking sustained danger or a more intense horror challenge. Published reviews raise questions about how frightening the experience feels, so intensity is a matter of taste rather than a guaranteed strength.

What do reviews say about the collection?

Reception is favorable overall in one captured critic-review snapshot, but the individual assessments show a meaningful split. Metacritic displayed a 75 Metascore, labeled “Generally Favorable,” with 17 positive, 11 mixed, and one negative review among 29 classified reviews on October 8, 2026. That is an aggregator snapshot, not a permanent score or a consensus shared by every critic. Metacritic critic reviews.

The lower end of the range is illustrated by GameSpot reviewer Mark Delaney, who rated the Xbox Series X version 5/10 (“Mediocre”) on June 15, 2023. His review’s summary argues that the series has been reimagined from the ground up, but its foundation still feels shaky. GameSpot review.

Across published criticism, recurring positives include atmosphere, visual upgrades, and the convenience of having the stories and added connective chapters together. Reservations include unevenness in Layers of Fear 2, concerns about the ending or voice acting, and whether the horror delivers enough intensity. These are critical observations, not a claim that every player will respond the same way.

How do players rate the PS5 version?

At the time observed on October 8, 2026, the PlayStation Store listing showed 4.33 out of 5 from 1,342 ratings for the listed PS5 product. The store identifies its reviews as coming from verified owners and subject to moderation. Is the 2023 release worth it for you?

It may suit newcomers

If you have not played the earlier games, the main advantage is scope: the collection places the two central games, their released DLC, and new chapters together. The Lighthouse material is intended to tie the stories together, offering a framing thread for players who would rather approach them as one larger collection.

Returning players should weigh what they already own

If you already own the earlier entries and add-ons, the value depends more on how much you want the reworked presentation and new connective story material. The package’s breadth matters less when much of its content is already in your library.

Choose it for atmosphere, not guaranteed intensity

The official description and review themes point toward exploratory, psychological horror. If your priority is a consistently high-pressure or action-heavy scare experience, the available reviews do not establish this as a reliable fit.
