“No Good Deed,” which aired May 9, 2024, is Law & Order Season 23, Episode 12—and the series’ 500th episode, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Its story follows a therapist’s death investigation into court, where a troubling connection to the defendant forces Baxter to take Price’s place. The episode’s central question is whether that familiar procedural shape gives the milestone a fitting sense of continuity or makes it feel like an ordinary installment.
What happens in “No Good Deed”?
Detectives Shaw and Riley investigate the death of a therapist whose clients include a long list of troubled people. The case then shifts to the courtroom: after a disturbing connection to the defendant comes to light, Baxter takes over Price’s chair. That move brings the investigation’s legal consequences into focus while drawing on the continuing tension between the two prosecutors.
Rotten Tomatoes lists the episode as TV-14 (D|L). That is the page’s rating information, not a detailed content advisory. The page credits Eriq La Salle as director and Rick Eid as screenwriter; Dick Wolf is listed as creator. (Rotten Tomatoes episode listing.)
Does the case feel distinctive enough for the 500th episode?
The therapist’s death and the defendant’s connection give the episode a case with a clear route from police investigation to courtroom complication. But the available plot description does not establish enough detail to assess the mystery’s clues or individual scenes. The more supportable distinction is tonal: the case is described as more in the territory of Law & Order: SVU than the original series’ usual fare, while its overall structure remains recognizably procedural.

That contrast is captured in Jack Ori’s TV Fanatic review, dated May 13, 2024, and reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes: “They marked their 500th episode with a story that, ironically enough, seemed more suited for SVU but otherwise seemed like a typical episode.” Ori rated it 4.2/5. The observation gets at the episode’s trade-off: a case that feels somewhat atypical can still be presented in a familiar weekly format, which may make the milestone feel grounded—or insufficiently marked.
Does Baxter and Price’s conflict give the milestone more weight?
The courtroom change gives the episode a second source of tension beyond the murder case. Mads Misasi’s Tell-Tale TV review, dated May 10, 2024, and reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes, emphasizes the ongoing friction between Baxter and Price after Baxter took over for Jack McCoy. That continuing character dynamic connects the episode to a larger transition in the series, rather than making the 500th episode depend on the number alone.

Whether that is enough to make the installment feel pivotal is a matter of critical judgment. A Beverly Hills Examiner review published May 10, 2024, argued that the 500th episode was not special enough despite a strong story, pointing in part to the absence of a tribute-style treatment. Read alongside Ori’s assessment, that response frames the episode’s reception as debated among individual critics—not as an audience consensus.
Verdict: a milestone carried by familiar format
“No Good Deed” has the ingredients of a substantial procedural: a therapist’s death, an investigation with many potential connections, a courtroom turn, and pressure between Baxter and Price. Its 500th-episode status adds significance, but the cited criticism suggests the episode does not make that significance equally visible in its presentation. The result is most compelling as a familiar Law & Order story with an important series marker attached, rather than an installment whose format unmistakably announces a celebration.
