After six days in a coma, he had to relearn how to walk, talk and play guitar. A year later, he released a song shaped by that recovery. A PerthNow profile published in September 2024 followed his effort to rebuild a music career and promote a second single.
The emergency that changed Luke’s life
According to Simon Collins’s PerthNow report, Luke went to Royal Perth Hospital on 19 June 2021 after his then-girlfriend had been injured in a hit-and-run. He collapsed at her bedside. Doctors found a major brain bleed caused by an arteriovenous malformation, or AVM, the report said.
Part of Luke’s skull was removed to relieve pressure, and he spent six days in an intensive-care coma. His family was told to say goodbye. Luke later recalled: “They said I was in the right place at the right time for all the wrong reasons.” The report attributed that recollection to Luke speaking to The West Australian.
Relearning life—and guitar
After waking, Luke faced the work of learning to walk and talk again, as well as recovering the ability to play guitar. His first slurred words after the coma were reported as a question: “Can I still play guitar?”

Music became both a reason to keep going and a practical rehabilitation goal. Luke set himself the task of writing and recording a new song within a year. He later said, “Music’s always been my thing. If I didn’t have this, I’d be in real trouble.”

From rehabilitation goal to released music
On 19 June 2022, one year after the haemorrhage, Luke released Long Way Home. The PerthNow report described it as inspired by his near-death experience; Powderfinger guitarist Darren Middleton mixed and mastered the track.
Luke had previously played in Perth progressive-rock trio SOMA before pursuing a solo path. The report said he had ignored warning signs including migraines and unexplained fainting. Those details belong to Luke’s reported history; they should not be treated as general medical advice or a substitute for professional care.

The 2024 return to performing
In September 2024, PerthNow covered Luke’s launch of a second single, Breaking the Chain, and announced regional performances in Bunbury on 26 September and Margaret River on 4 October. Both concert dates have passed; the report does not establish a current tour schedule or the present availability of either release.
Returning to the stage also involved challenges. The profile said Luke had a seizure during his third gig back, took medication to prevent seizures, and wore a hat to shield his eyes from stage lighting. These are details reported in September 2024, not confirmation of his current health or treatment.
