Late-night hosts reacted to the April 2025 tariff news in a sequence of monologues that tracked the news itself: an ironic take on the sweeping announcement on April 3, sharp criticism of the rollout on April 4, jokes about falling markets on April 9, and a round of mockery over the pause that followed. The most documented examples come from Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel. This recap sets out what each said, when it aired, and how much each line depends on a policy or market claim that viewers should check separately.
The April 2025 sequence, date by date
The reactions are easiest to understand as four distinct news moments rather than one reaction to “the tariffs.” Each night’s material responded to something different, and the jokes changed with it.
April 3: the announcement
The Guardian’s roundup of late-night reaction describes Stephen Colbert and other hosts responding to the sweeping tariff announcement. Colbert’s line turned the administration’s framing into an ironic complaint: “America is finally free from the tyranny of being able to buy stuff from other countries.” The joke works by taking a claimed benefit of the policy and presenting the loss of access to imported goods as the freedom being celebrated. It is Colbert’s satire of the framing, not a description of what the policy did to prices or trade.
April 4: the rollout
The following night, Seth Meyers criticized how the policy was being implemented and described its possible economic consequences. The Guardian headline quoted him calling it “Mafia-style governance designed to bully the world into submission.” That is a pointed characterization of the rollout by Meyers, and it should be attributed to him as an opinion rather than presented as a neutral account of the policy.

April 9: escalation and falling markets
On April 9 the hosts turned to escalation and the market reaction. The Guardian’s roundup reports jokes and remarks from Kimmel, Colbert and Meyers on the day’s losses. Colbert compared the market’s response to stepping “on a rake and then stepped down a mineshaft.” The metaphor is about how the market seemed to be getting worse with each move, and it is a comic image, not a measurement of any index.
April 10: the pause
The pause was announced on April 9. It covered most countries while higher tariffs on China were kept in place. The monologues about it aired on April 10, and the Guardian described all three hosts making the reversal their subject. Kimmel’s headline joke was “He drove the economy into a sand trap and took a mulligan.” Colbert quipped that the decision had saved the country from “a previous decision by Donald Trump.” Both jokes depend on the reader accepting that the pause was a reversal of an earlier move, which is the core fact of the segment.

April 13: clips replayed in a political broadcast
A CNN transcript from April 13 reproduces clips and attributed remarks from Colbert, Meyers and Kimmel about the pause and the shifting tariff announcements. The transcript is useful for confirming what each host said on air. It is not a source for the tariff rate or the legal status of any tariff, which needs a separate official check.

The key lines at a glance
The table below lists the attributed lines covered in this recap, the device each one uses, and whether understanding the joke requires a specific factual premise.
| Host (show) | Date reported | Line as reported | Comic device | Depends on a specific policy or market fact? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stephen Colbert (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert) | April 3, 2025 | “America is finally free from the tyranny of being able to buy stuff from other countries.” | Irony about a claimed benefit | Yes: the joke assumes the announced policy restricted purchases of foreign goods |
| Seth Meyers (Late Night with Seth Meyers) | April 4, 2025 | “Mafia-style governance designed to bully the world into submission.” | Direct criticism of the rollout | Partly: it is a judgment about how the policy was implemented |
| Stephen Colbert | April 9, 2025 | The market’s response was like “stepping on a rake and then stepped down a mineshaft.” | Metaphor for a worsening market | Yes: the image only lands if markets fell that day |
| Jimmy Kimmel (Jimmy Kimmel Live!) | April 10, 2025 | “He drove the economy into a sand trap and took a mulligan.” | Golf metaphor for reversal | Yes: the joke assumes the pause reversed an earlier decision |
| Stephen Colbert | April 10, 2025 | The decision saved the country from “a previous decision by Donald Trump.” | Self-referential quip about reversal | Yes: it depends on the pause undoing the earlier move |
| Jimmy Kimmel | April 11, 2025 | An “almost comical cloud of uncertainty.” | Description of mood | Low: it describes the atmosphere rather than a policy detail |

How to read a late-night tariff joke
- Attribute the line to the host. A monologue is commentary. “Colbert said” is accurate; “the tariffs are…” is a different claim that needs its own source.
- Identify the news moment. Match the joke to the announcement, the escalation or the pause. The April 10 reversal jokes make no sense without the earlier announcement, and treating the three as one event blurs them.
- Check the premise. If a joke depends on a market move or a policy detail, verify that detail in a dated primary source before repeating it.
- Separate verdicts from descriptions. Meyers’s “Mafia-style” line is a judgment. Kimmel’s “cloud of uncertainty” describes a mood. Both are reported accurately, but they do different jobs.
Limits of this recap
- The main sources are journalistic roundups, chiefly The Guardian’s coverage dated April 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11, 2025. They are not complete transcripts of every broadcast, so the quotes here are the ones reported, not a full record of each show.
- The CNN transcript of April 13, 2025 is a secondary airing of clips. It confirms attributed remarks but does not verify tariff policy.
- Tariff policy has changed since April 2025. This article describes the news cycle as it stood then. For current tariff rates or legal status, check official government sources such as the U.S. Trade Representative and the White House, which publish dated policy actions.
- These hosts did not respond identically, and a handful of examples does not cover every segment that aired that month.
What the recap shows
The late-night reaction in April 2025 was not one joke repeated. Colbert used irony about the announcement, Meyers pressed a harsh judgment about the rollout, Kimmel and Colbert used metaphors for market losses and the reversal, and each segment depended on a different fact. Read them as dated commentary on a specific news cycle, and check the policy facts they assume before treating any line as information.
