How the first season sets up the contest
The series is set in 1878, after the samurai class has lost its status, against a backdrop of poverty and a cholera outbreak. Netflix’s guide to the series describes a deadly contest called Kodoku: 292 former samurai race from Kyoto toward Tokyo, with 100 billion yen promised to the winner. Contestants earn wooden tags by killing rivals.
Who is in the Season 2 cast?
Netflix has not released a definitive Season 2 cast list. Its renewal story names characters involved in the continuation, but character appearances in a plot description do not by themselves confirm which actors will return.

Writer-director Michihito Fujii said, “I’m honored to say that the series has officially been greenlit for a second season.” Junichi Okada, the lead actor, producer and action choreographer, said he was “excited to get back into this wild world” and that the team hoped to make the next season “even more energetic and action-packed.” These comments express enthusiasm and intent; they do not establish a release schedule, production start or cast list.

Is Last Samurai Standing based on a book?
Yes. The series adapts Shogo Imamura’s historical-fiction novel series Ikusagami. Netflix’s guide says it was serialized in Kodansha’s Morning magazine over four volumes beginning in December 2022; Netflix’s production announcement identifies the novels as published by Kodansha Bunko. The novels are source material for the series, not a Season 2 tie-in.
What is known about the production?
Netflix’s production announcement identifies Office Shirous as the production company and Netflix as planner and producer; the original season has six episodes. The announcement also says the large Tenryuji Temple melee was filmed over multiple days with more than 1,000 cast and crew members. Those details describe Season 1 production, not the schedule or scale of Season 2.
