What happens in the finale?
Tommy leaves MTex and considers his next move
Tommy tells T.L. that Cami fired him because he tried to run MTex like a business instead of treating it as her “memento or a dream.” A job with Chevron is an option, but it would mean returning to another company’s structure. Tommy realizes he wants to be a landman again and pauses work on Cooper’s well while he figures out how to proceed.
Cooper faces questions after Johnny’s death
Cooper and Ariana go to the police after Johnny’s attack. Detectives focus on security footage showing Cooper hit Johnny 17 times, including blows after Johnny was no longer an immediate threat. When Ariana learns Johnny has died, she calls Rebecca. Rebecca tells Cooper not to answer questions, challenges the interrogation, and steps in as his lawyer.

Tommy survives a highway pileup and works the Cooper case
Tommy survives a cascading highway collision involving multiple cars and a 16-wheeler. Why does Tommy start a new oil company?
Tommy’s choice is between taking a conventional job with another oil company and building an independent business around Cooper’s well. The finale makes the trade-off clear: employment offers a safer corporate route, while independence gives Tommy more control but puts the venture’s financing, legal position, and family relationships on the line.
| Path | Control | Capital | Exposure | Family involvement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accept a job at another oil company | Less control; Tommy would work within an existing company. | Not stated in the episode recap; the job is considered, then rejected. | Would avoid founding this particular venture, though the recap does not establish the job’s terms or risks. | Would not create the same family-run company. |
| Build an independent venture around Cooper’s well | Tommy and Cooper shape the new company and its roles. | Gallino agrees to honor Cooper’s original well contract and provide an additional $18 million for three more wells. | Tommy and the company take on legal and business risk; Gallino warns Tommy that betrayal will cost him what he loves most. | Cooper leads the board, and Tommy’s family and trusted colleagues join the venture. |
Tommy chooses independence. He asks Gallino to honor Cooper’s original well contract and add $18 million for three more wells. Gallino agrees, but makes the backing personal with a warning about the cost of betrayal. Tommy, Angela, and Nate then create a limited-liability company to hold the money and leases.

Who owns CTT Oil Exploration and Cattle?
The finale identifies the new company as CTT Oil Exploration and Cattle, but the recap does not specify ownership percentages or a complete member list for the limited-liability company. It does establish the operating roles Tommy announces at the well:
- Cooper: president of the board
- Tommy: senior vice president
- Nate: treasurer
- Rebecca: chief operating officer and chief counsel
- Dale: exploration lead
- T.L.: drilling oversight
- Boss: crew lead
- Ariana: positioned to work as office manager
Tommy also says employees will receive 25% of profits. That is the announced employee profit share, not a stated ownership percentage. When Cooper hesitates, Tommy tells him, “We already started, son.”

What does the ending mean for Season 3?
CTT turns Tommy’s firing into a new alliance that combines Cooper’s well, Tommy’s experience, Rebecca’s legal work, and Gallino’s money. It also leaves unresolved conflicts rather than securing a straightforward victory. Cami could oppose Tommy over leases MTex had not technically purchased, while Gallino’s financing gives him leverage over the new company. Tom’s Guide identifies those tensions as central possibilities for Season 3.
The closing family scene gives the finale its emotional counterweight. Tommy warns Angela that tragedy will dominate their days, then says, “But not today. Today, we win.” Angela answers that they win every day if they take time to notice it. When Tommy sees the recurring coyote, he tells it, “No, you can’t have today, bud. Today is mine.” The coyote and the exchange frame the win as temporary and deliberately cherished, not proof that the danger is over.
