Monty Miller’s heart attack hangs over the story, but the episode spends much of its time with the Norris family: Tommy and Angela clash, while Cooper begins planning a future with Ariana. A hospital-room visit from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones briefly connects those family tensions to the show’s oil-and-gas ambitions.
What happens in “WolfCamp”

The episode deals with the fallout from Monty Miller’s heart attack, then shifts much of its attention to the Norrises. Tommy and Angela are at odds, and Cooper is thinking about a future with Ariana. These threads place family choices alongside the work and business pressures that shape the series.

When Tommy arrives at the hospital, Jones is in Monty’s room. In Fort Worth Magazine’s account of the scene, Jones tells Monty that wanting to be closer to his daughter, who was at Stanford, drew him toward oil and gas. He says he bought lots intending to build houses, then drilled four gas wells; in the episode’s anecdote, those wells generated enough money in 18 months for him to buy the Cowboys. This is Jones’s story as presented in the scene, not independently verified business history.
What Jerry Jones’s cameo adds
Jones’s appearance could seem like a brief detour from the fictional family drama. Instead, his story echoes one of the show’s central tensions: ambition can grow out of a desire to provide for or stay close to family, yet work can also pull people away from the relationships they value. Fort Worth Magazine’s Stephen Montoya reads the cameo through that tension; it is an interpretation of the scene, not a confirmed statement of the creators’ intent.

The anecdote also prompts Tommy to consider his priorities. Fort Worth Magazine reports that he later calls Angela and tells her he loves her. That response ties the cameo back to the Norrises rather than leaving it as a celebrity appearance standing on its own.
Does Episode 9 work as a standalone hour?
As setup for the finale
“WolfCamp” is deliberately forward-looking. Monty’s crisis and the Norrises’ shifting relationships give the finale several threads to carry forward, while Cooper’s plans with Ariana point toward a future beyond the immediate family conflict. If the measure is whether the episode creates anticipation, it does its job.

As an episode with its own payoff
The trade-off is that setup takes precedence over resolution. The episode raises or advances several personal stakes, but its main movement is toward what comes next rather than toward a satisfying close on its own. That makes it a less complete installment than its best moments might suggest.

“WolfCamp” is an effective penultimate chapter, especially when Jones’s story reflects the series’ collision of family and ambition. The cameo has a reason to be there, and the episode gives the finale useful momentum. Viewers looking for a more self-contained hour, however, may find that the setup outweighs the payoff.
