Lance Armstrong said on social media that 14 July 2024 marked six months since his last drink, which he dated to 14 January. The disclosure was reported by PerthNow on 15 July 2024; it does not establish whether he remains sober today.

What Armstrong said about six months without alcohol

In a post quoted by PerthNow, Armstrong wrote: “Jan 14 ===> July 14 = 6 months since the last time I had a sip of alcohol, and I am loving this journey.” The report, published 15 July 2024, described his six-month milestone as falling the day before.

Armstrong also made clear that he was speaking about his own experience, not urging others to stop drinking: “This isn’t a flex or a suggestion for others; it’s simply an acknowledgement that sometimes that voice in your head and heart is there, and sometimes they are incredibly persistent.” He added that “Focus, Clarity, Inspiration, and Self Love” felt like old friends he was glad to see again.

How this relates to the doping case—and what it does not show

Armstrong’s sobriety disclosure was a personal update. The reporting does not connect his decision to stop drinking with the doping case, and it gives no basis for treating one as a consequence of the other.

The historical context is that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency announced on 24 August 2012 that Armstrong had received a lifetime period of ineligibility and disqualification of competitive results dating from 1 August 1998. USADA said he chose not to contest the evidence in its independent arbitration process. Its Reasoned Decision sets out the case record and reasoning.

USADA’s annual-report chronology records that the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) accepted the decision on 22 October 2012 and removed Armstrong’s seven Tour de France titles and other results dating from 1 August 1998. USADA’s 2012 annual report documents that subsequent action. The sanction and UCI’s acceptance were distinct steps: USADA announced the disciplinary outcome, and the UCI then acted on it.

What the 2024 update can—and cannot—tell readers

The report documents what Armstrong said about a six-month milestone in July 2024. It does not establish his current relationship with alcohol, whether he pursued treatment, or whether he had a diagnosis. Nor is one person’s disclosure evidence of a general recovery outcome. Armstrong explicitly framed the post as an acknowledgment of his personal experience, not a recommendation.
