Short answer: LALAL.AI can separate vocals, instrumental backing and individual instruments from supported audio and video files. You can process files and listen to full previews on its free Starter plan, but downloading the complete separated stems requires Lite or Pro. The current cloud workflow lists 10 separation types, so the older “vocals plus seven more” wording is incomplete.
What LALAL.AI actually does
LALAL.AI is a cloud stem-separation service. It analyzes a finished recording and reconstructs approximate components; it does not recover the original studio multitracks. Vocal isolation produces an estimated singing-vocal stem, while instrumental extraction creates backing audio with vocals reduced or removed. Instrument separation attempts to pull elements such as drums, bass, guitar, piano or synthesizer from the complete mix.
Because the source is a finished mix, bleed, reverb, phasing, warbling and watery artifacts can remain. “Removed vocals” normally means reduced or separated, not guaranteed silence.
Which stems are available?
LALAL.AI’s current cloud documentation lists these 10 separation types: the desktop-app page describes the same cloud lineup.

The headline’s “seven more stems” may reflect an older product description, a simplified count, or confusion with the local Lyra model. Lyra supports seven categories—vocals, instrumental, drums, bass, piano, acoustic guitar and electric guitar—whereas cloud processing offers all 10 listed above. Availability can vary by platform and processing mode.
Is LALAL.AI really free?
It is free to test, not free for downloadable full results. As shown on LALAL.AI’s pricing page and its Stem Splitter page on August 18, 2026, Starter is always free, allows 10 minutes in the Relaxed Queue and accepts files up to 200 MB. You can listen to the complete processed result online, but Starter does not include downloading the full output.

Lite and Pro list unlimited Relaxed Queue processing, while Fast Queue minutes are capped. Processing usage is calculated as file duration × number of selected stem-separation types. A five-minute file processed for three separation types therefore uses 15 processing minutes. One-time Fast Queue top-ups listed by LALAL.AI are Master (750 minutes for $50), Premium (3,000 minutes for $190) and Enterprise (5,000 minutes for $300).
How to separate vocals or instruments
- Open the LALAL.AI Stem Splitter or Vocal Remover.
- Select a type such as Vocal and Instrumental, Drums or Piano.
- Click Select Files and upload a supported audio or video file.
- Wait while LALAL.AI creates previews of the resulting components.
- Listen to both components before deciding whether the separation is usable.
- Open the settings control to compare another neural network or processing option if needed.
- Try Enhanced Processing when the result has excessive leakage or sounds over-compressed. For vocal material with room sound, test De-Echo or available reverb-reduction controls.
- Click Split in Full.
- Choose Starter for online listening, or Lite/Pro when you need downloadable full files.
- Download from the result panel or use emailed download links when offered.

Output generally retains the uploaded format. Premium users can choose another supported audio format, including MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC or AIFF. Video may remain video or be converted to audio where the interface supports that choice. A 200 MB Starter limit and 2 GB Lite/Pro limit apply per file.
What can you use the separated material for?
- Create a karaoke or practice backing track.
- Study a singer’s phrasing or isolate a vocal reference.
- Extract bass, drums, guitar, piano or wind parts for transcription.
- Prepare remix and mashup material.
- Analyze an arrangement’s instrumentation.
- Separate speech from music or background noise.
- Pull dialogue from a film, series or other video for transcription or translation; LALAL.AI presents this as a Voice Cleaner use case at its Voice Cleaner page.
How good are the results?
Conditions that usually help
- Clear lead vocals with little reverb.
- Simple arrangements and instruments occupying distinct frequency ranges.
- Clean, high-quality source files with limited compression.
- A single lead voice rather than several overlapping singers.
Conditions that make separation harder
- Duets, choirs and dense backing vocals.
- Heavy vocal effects, distortion or compression.
- Live recordings with room ambience.
- Layered guitars, synthesizers or percussion sharing vocal frequencies.
- Crowded orchestral material or low-quality copies from online video.
LALAL.AI says results tend to improve when vocals are clear, instruments are not heavily layered over them and the source has limited distortion and compression artifacts. A stem can be perfectly adequate for karaoke, practice or a rough remix yet unsuitable for a commercial release. Critical work may require EQ, gating, de-noising, spectral editing or a second separator. The preview is the decisive test for your particular file.

Troubleshooting common problems
Vocal or instrument bleed
- Compare another neural network and change Enhanced Processing.
- Generate new previews rather than judging only the first result.
- Use a cleaner, less-compressed source or another version of the recording.
Warbling, phasing or watery sound
- Compare previews and models.
- Use the isolated component only where it sounds acceptable.
- For important work, perform manual spectral repair or try another separator.
File rejected
- Confirm the extension is on the supported list.
- Check the per-file limit: 200 MB on Starter or 2 GB on Lite/Pro.
- Convert an unusual container to WAV, FLAC, MP3 or MP4.
Processing is slow
Starter uses the Relaxed Queue. Paid users receive Fast Queue minutes; after those are consumed, processing can continue in the slower Relaxed Queue.
The full download is unavailable
This is normally the Starter restriction, not a processing error. Upgrade to Lite or Pro for downloadable full results.

Web, desktop, mobile and local processing
LALAL.AI offers web, desktop, iOS and Android access, with one account and shared minute balance across platforms. The desktop app supports Windows 10/11, macOS 10.15 or later and Ubuntu 22.04 or later, and allows batch selection of up to 20 audio or video files. It also provides file organization and configurable output locations.
Cloud processing offers the full 10-type lineup and uses account minutes. The desktop app’s local Lyra model supports seven categories and, according to LALAL.AI, does not deduct from the account minute balance. Local processing is therefore not equivalent to the broader cloud workflow.
Copyright, privacy and publication rights
Technical ability to upload a song or video does not grant the right to redistribute what you extract. Publishing an acapella, distributing a karaoke track, monetizing a remix, using isolated vocals commercially or reposting film dialogue may require permission from rights holders. LALAL.AI’s karaoke guidance recommends copyright-free songs and noncommercial use; see its karaoke guide. Determine the applicable permissions for your country, the recording and your intended use.
Before uploading unreleased music, confidential interviews, client material or personal recordings, review LALAL.AI’s current Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. The pricing page links those policies, but retention and deletion terms can change.
When LALAL.AI is the right choice
- Choose it for a browser-based workflow, quick previews, audio and video input, occasional stem extraction and a simple interface.
- Be cautious if you need downloadable results at no cost, process long files regularly, require artifact-free commercial stems, need true multitrack recovery or require free offline processing.

Verdict
LALAL.AI is useful for testing and producing approximate vocal or instrument stems from supported media. Its free Starter tier lets you hear whether a particular file separates well, but it is not a free downloadable-stem service. Pay only after the preview meets your needs, and treat every output as an AI reconstruction rather than a recovered studio track.
