She described that approach in remarks from a Southern Living interview, reported by Country Now.
What did Lainey Wilson mean by “knowing who you are”?
Wilson framed the idea as part of what she called her “method to this madness”: “I think it’s always about just planting your feet where they are and knowing who you are, standing up for what you believe in, and keeping your people close.” Country Now’s October 2, 2025 coverage attributes the remark to Wilson during a conversation with Southern Living about her life offstage.

In context, “knowing who you are” is not presented as a formal philosophy or a guaranteed way to handle fame. It is Wilson’s personal description of staying connected to her values and relationships while work takes her into public life. She puts the emphasis on keeping her footing and acting in line with what she believes.
What does “keeping your people close” look like for Wilson?
Wilson links that closeness to returning to Baskin, Louisiana, and making time for the people who relate to her as family and friend—not only as a performer. Country Now reports her saying that when she goes home, people stop by because they want to see her, and that she tries to make time to feel like “Lainey, the sister and friend and daughter.”

That distinction is central to her account: the relationships she values are not defined by the demands or visibility of her career. Her hometown ties offer a setting where she is known through ordinary personal roles as well as through music.
How does her career story connect to resilience?
Wilson has described a long path into the music business. In remarks reproduced by Country Now, she said she wrote her first song at nine, began playing guitar at eleven, moved to Nashville at nineteen and spent seven years there before getting a publishing deal. These are her recollections in the interview coverage, not independent measures of career milestones.

She said she wants younger listeners to understand that she had been working at music for a long time. Country Now also reports her view that resilience and hard work surface naturally in her songwriting because they come from her own life. The point is personal testimony: she writes from her perspective and hopes the songs connect with others, rather than claiming to speak for everyone.

In its account of the Southern Living conversation, Country Now describes Wilson’s effort to keep her identity from collapsing into her job: her music career matters, but she also wants time for the person who is a sister, friend and daughter. Her comments about going home to Baskin make that separation concrete through relationships and routines, rather than an abstract claim about fame.

Country Now also reports that during the Whirlwind Tour Wilson had a “cowgirl of the night” tradition, bringing a fan onstage to repeat an empowering message. That is one public expression of encouragement; the private grounding she describes rests on values and the people close to her.
