Based on Laura Lippman’s 2019 novel, it follows Jewish housewife Maddie Schwartz, who pursues a new life as an investigative journalist, and Cleo Johnson, a mother caught in the city’s political undercurrents. Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram play the two women whose lives converge after Maddie becomes fixated on Cleo’s death.
What is Lady in the Lake about?
The story begins with the disappearance of a young girl in Baltimore on Thanksgiving 1966. Apple describes the ensuing story as two women’s lives converging on a “fatal collision course.” Maddie Schwartz (Natalie Portman) is trying to leave a hidden past behind and reinvent herself as a journalist. Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram) is navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore while trying to support her family.

The series is a thriller and drama, with the women’s intersecting stories at its center. Its premise links Maddie’s pursuit of a new identity and reporting career with her fixation on Cleo’s death; it is not presented as a documentary reconstruction of a real case.
Is the series based on a book or a true story?
It is an adaptation of Laura Lippman’s 2019 novel, not a direct retelling of a single true-crime case. CBS Baltimore reported that Lippman’s novel drew inspiration from two unrelated Baltimore cases: the abduction and murder of 11-year-old Esther Lebowitz, and the death of 33-year-old Shirley Parker, whose body was found in the Druid Hill Park Reservoir. Those cases are reported inspirations for a work of fiction; the series’ connected plot should not be confused with a factual account of either case. CBS Baltimore reported on the novel’s inspirations and the Baltimore filming.
