Lady Gaga’s most striking Guinness World Records span three very different arenas: first-week U.S. digital album sales, worldwide singles sales, and a Twitter following that once led the platform. These are documented milestones from specific years—not a claim that Gaga holds those records today or an exhaustive list of every record associated with her.
1. Born This Way set a U.S. digital album sales record
Guinness World Records lists Lady Gaga as the holder of “Fastest-selling digital album (US)” for Born This Way. The album sold 662,000 digital units in its first week, and the record entry is dated 11 June 2011. The scope matters: this was a U.S. digital-sales milestone, not a worldwide total.

Guinness separately reports that Born This Way sold 1.1 million copies in total during its first week. The page says Amazon’s controversial 99-cent promotion helped boost that broader total. The 1.1 million figure should not be confused with the 662,000 digital units in the record claim. Guinness World Records’ entry for the fastest-selling digital album in the U.S. notes that the underlying U.S. sales data comes from Nielsen SoundScan, whose tracking history began in March 1991.
2. Three singles reached 10 million sales worldwide—and “Shallow” made four
In a record entry dated 8 December 2020, Guinness described Gaga as the first female artist to sell 10 million copies worldwide of three singles: “Just Dance” (2008), “Poker Face” (2008), and “Bad Romance” (2009). The page later adds “Shallow,” her duet with Bradley Cooper from A Star Is Born, as a fourth 10-million-selling single. Guinness reports that “Shallow” shifted 10.2 million copies worldwide in 2019.

The same entry documents Gaga’s appearances on the IFPI annual Global Top Digital Singles chart: “Poker Face” at No. 1 and “Just Dance” at No. 4 in 2009; “Bad Romance” at No. 2 and “Telephone” at No. 4 in 2010; “Born This Way” at No. 6 in 2011; and “Shallow” at No. 8 in 2019. These are the rankings Guinness reports for those chart years, not a present-day streaming chart. See Guinness World Records’ entry on female artists with singles selling 10 million copies.

Gaga’s social-media record is a chapter in a changing leaderboard, not a current title. Guinness says it began monitoring Twitter’s most-followed user in 2010, with Ashton Kutcher as the first record holder. Gaga took the lead later that year and competed with Justin Bieber for the top spot in the years that followed.
Rank #2
A Guinness snapshot published 1 February 2013 recorded Bieber passing Gaga: he had 33,682,239 followers, compared with Gaga’s 33,581,095. Katy Perry later passed both in 2014 with 52.4 million followers, according to a Guinness retrospective published on 30 March 2023. Twitter has since been rebranded as X; these dated figures do not establish Gaga’s current ranking on the platform. Guinness’ history of Twitter’s most-followed user and its 2013 report of Bieber overtaking Gaga document the transition.

How to read these records in context
- Different kinds of scale: the Born This Way figure counts first-week U.S. digital units; the singles milestones count worldwide sales per song. Those numbers describe different markets and units, so they should not be ranked as if they measured the same thing.
- Specific dates, not a live leaderboard: the sales entries refer to particular release-era achievements, while the Twitter figures record follower standings at particular moments.
- Not necessarily a complete inventory: Guinness cautions that record information online may not be updated immediately. Its full Record Application Search requires registration and login, so public pages do not establish every record Gaga may have held. Guinness World Records’ search page explains where its record search is available.
