Lady Gaga defended transgender creator Dylan Mulvaney on March 11, 2024, after hostile comments followed Mulvaney’s International Women’s Day post featuring Gaga. Gaga rejected the word “backlash” for the response, calling it “hatred” and saying people of all gender identities and races deserve peace and dignity.
What happened
On March 8, 2024, International Women’s Day, Mulvaney shared a photo and video featuring herself with Gaga on Instagram. The post was captioned “Happy International Women’s Day,” according to ABC News and TheWrap.

After the post drew hostile comments, Gaga reposted the image and issued a statement on March 11. Her response addressed both the comments and the way some coverage described them.
What Lady Gaga said
Gaga objected to reports using “backlash” to describe the comments. She explained that backlash would suggest people who loved or respected her and Mulvaney disliked something they had done; in her view, the comments were hatred instead. ABC News quoted her statement:
#1 Best Overall
“It’s appalling to me that a post about National Women’s Day by Dylan Mulvaney and me would be met with such vitriol and hatred.”
“When I see a newspaper reporting on hatred but calling it ‘backlash’ I feel it is important to clarify that hatred is hatred, and this kind of hatred is violence.”

“‘Backlash’ would imply that people who love or respect Dylan and me didn’t like something we did. This is not backlash. This is hatred.”
Those are Gaga’s descriptions of what she saw in the comments, not a statistical or legal finding about them.

Gaga’s message about dignity and representation
Gaga’s statement went beyond expressing support for Mulvaney. She said she did not speak for the transgender community as a whole, while still expressing protectiveness toward Mulvaney and the community. The Independent quoted her saying, “I certainly do not speak for this community, but I have something to say.”
She called for transgender lives to be cherished and said people of all gender identities and races deserve peace and dignity. ABC News also reported that Mulvaney replied to Gaga’s post with an affectionate message.

Why the word “backlash” mattered
“Backlash” can imply a negative reaction to someone’s actions or a change. Gaga argued that using it here blurred the distinction between disagreement and the hostility she believed the comments represented. Her central point was that the response should not be framed as ordinary criticism when, in her view, it amounted to hatred.

The Independent and TheWrap situated the episode amid earlier hostility toward Mulvaney after her 2023 Bud Light partnership. That was broader context, not the immediate trigger for Gaga’s March 11 statement: the immediate event was the response to Mulvaney’s March 8 International Women’s Day post featuring Gaga.
