No. Olivier Gay reported in March 2026 that a lawyer representing game developer Sandfall Interactive had asked him to stop selling the comic under its title, but Sandfall withdrew its representatives’ demands four days later. Gay said the comic could continue as L’Académie Clair-Obscur. The available reporting does not establish that a court case was filed or that any court ordered a name change.
What happened in the name dispute?
On March 6, 2026, comic writer Olivier Gay said publicly that he had received a letter from a lawyer representing Sandfall Interactive. According to Gay’s account, the letter asked him to stop selling the Drakoo comic under the title Académie Clair-Obscur. The letter itself was not published in the reporting cited here, so its terms are known through Gay’s description.
On March 10, Sandfall said it was withdrawing its legal representative’s demands, adding that the action involving the comic did not reflect the studio’s wishes and values. Gay subsequently thanked the studio and said the series could continue under its original title. GamesRadar+ also reported the withdrawal and Gay’s confirmation.
That sequence matters: a reported legal demand is not the same as a court ruling. The available accounts establish no adjudicated case and no court-ordered renaming.

Why was the comic’s title planned before the game’s release?
The publisher and creator described a development history that began years before Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was released. Gay said the comic was pitched to publisher Drakoo in 2019 and that he had a contract for it under the title from March 2024. Drakoo separately said the series was imagined in 2019 and its title was approved before the game was announced. The contract date comes from Gay’s account as reported by Numerama; the contract was not independently reviewed in that coverage.
The game was released on April 24, 2025, according to the Brazilian report cited in Numerama’s timeline. The comic’s first volume followed on January 7, 2026. The chronology supports the publisher’s account that the comic was conceived and named before the game’s release; it does not by itself settle any question of trademark rights or legal liability.
Are the comic and game about the same thing?
No. L’Académie Clair-Obscur is a French-language fantasy comic about Daimon, a peasant admitted to an elite magic school despite lacking the education and social codes of its noble students. Numerama reports that “clair-obscur” refers in the comic to a particular magical technique. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a separate role-playing game. The publisher said the comic was an independent editorial project and that neither its artwork nor its story shared points in common with the game; that is Drakoo’s stated position, not a legal finding.
What did Drakoo and Sandfall say?
In a post dated March 9, Drakoo said that developing a comic series often takes years between conception and publication, and that L’Académie Clair-Obscur was imagined in 2019 with its title validated before the game was announced. The publisher also said it had never intended to create confusion with the game or profit from its notoriety.

Sandfall’s March 10 statement, reproduced by Numerama, said: “Nous avons toujours voulu soutenir les artistes et encourager la créativité, et c’est l’une des valeurs les plus importantes que nous voulons défendre à Sandfall.” The studio said it was withdrawing its representatives’ demands because the action did not align with its wishes and values.
