La historia popular de Jack o’ Lantern cuenta que Stingy Jack engañó al diablo y, al morir, quedó condenado a vagar entre el cielo y el infierno con un carbón encendido dentro de un nabo ahuecado. Es una leyenda, no la biografía comprobable de una persona real. Lo que sí está documentado es una costumbre irlandesa de tallar nabos para hacer faroles de Halloween; la calabaza se volvió la forma más conocida después, en Estados Unidos.
¿Quién era Stingy Jack?
Stingy Jack —Jack el Tacaño— es el protagonista de un cuento popular asociado al origen del nombre Jack o’ Lantern. Sus versiones cambian, pero comparten una idea central: Jack engaña al diablo en más de una ocasión y obtiene la promesa de que este no se llevará su alma al infierno.
En una versión recogida por la Biblioteca del Congreso, cuando Jack muere tampoco es admitido en el cielo. El diablo le entrega un carbón encendido para iluminar su camino; Jack lo coloca dentro de un nabo tallado y queda vagando con esa luz. La biblioteca atribuye a la leyenda la costumbre de tallar caras en nabos para ahuyentar espíritus. Es un relato tradicional, no una secuencia de hechos históricos verificables. ¿Qué se tallaba en Irlanda antes de las calabazas?
En Irlanda se tallaban nabos con rostros aterradores y se colocaban velas en su interior. El Museo Nacional de Irlanda vincula esa costumbre de Halloween con la historia de Jack y describe el farol de nabo como antecedente de la forma popular actual. Museo Nacional de Irlanda: “Ghost turnip”.

La ficha del museo aporta un ejemplo material, con una salvedad importante: el objeto expuesto es un modelo de yeso realizado por la artista del museo Eileen Barnes, no el nabo original conservado. El museo recibió en 1943 un farol de nabo de una maestra que enseñaba cerca de Fintown, en el condado de Donegal. Según ella, ese tipo de farol se elaboraba en la localidad alrededor de 1900.
¿Por qué se usan calabazas en Halloween?
La calabaza no originó la leyenda ni fue el material descrito para la costumbre irlandesa. El Museo Nacional de Irlanda la presenta como un desarrollo estadounidense de esa tradición. Smithsonian explica que los inmigrantes irlandeses en Estados Unidos adoptaron calabazas, más abundantes allí que los nabos. El nabo tampoco fue el único vegetal utilizado históricamente para faroles en Europa: Smithsonian menciona también patatas y remolachas en distintas tradiciones. Por eso, la transición no debe entenderse como una práctica idéntica en todos los lugares.
