The newspaper removed Insights from the article in question after the disputed text appeared, but the feature remained on other Voices content at the time. The episode raised questions about publishing unreviewed AI-generated political context alongside journalism.
What did the LA Times AI say about the KKK?
The disputed passage appeared alongside Gustavo Arellano’s Feb. 25, 2025, column about Anaheim’s history with the Ku Klux Klan. In its AI-generated “different views” section, Insights wrote: “Local historical accounts occasionally frame the 1920s Klan as a product of ‘white Protestant culture’ responding to societal changes rather than an explicitly hate-driven movement, minimizing its ideological threat.”
Critics objected that this phrasing could make a racist, white-supremacist organization sound like a subject of ordinary historical disagreement. CNN anchor Laura Coates captured the criticism this way: “Different views? Great. Different facts when one is not a fact? Bad.” The point was not that historical interpretation is never contested, but that a tool presenting perspectives should not give an apologetic or minimizing account the appearance of an equally sound counter-position.
What was LA Times Insights?
Launched on March 3, 2025, Insights was an experimental AI feature for selected Los Angeles Times Voices material, including opinion columns, editorials, commentary, criticism and reviews. It was designed to identify an article’s position on a five-point political spectrum, summarize its ideas and offer “different views” with links to other sources. The labels included Left, Center Left, Center, Center Right and Right.

Executive chairman Patrick Soon-Shiong said the purpose was to give readers “an instantly accessible way to see a wide range of different AI-enabled perspectives alongside the positions presented in the article.” He also said he believed varied viewpoints would support the paper’s journalistic mission and help readers navigate national issues. That stated aim was to add context and viewpoint diversity, not to rate the quality of an article.
Why did the LA Times remove Insights from the KKK article?
Reports by TheWrap on March 4 and The Guardian on March 5 said the Times had removed Insights from the Klan-related column roughly a day after the feature launched. The output had been criticized for downplaying the Klan and presenting a misleading counter-perspective. The removal was specific to that article: reports said Insights was still visible on other Voices material at the time. The available reporting does not establish that the newspaper discontinued the feature altogether.

Who made the AI-generated material, and was it reviewed?
The Times said Insights analysis was not created by its editorial staff. Its documentation attributed viewpoint analysis to a partnership with Particle News and Perspectives summaries to a partnership with Perplexity. The AI content was not reviewed by Times journalists before publication.
The newspaper disclosed that the feature was experimental and that AI-generated material could be imperfect or incomplete. That disclosure helps readers understand the feature’s status, but it does not make an inaccurate or misleading framing harmless. Publishing AI text next to journalism can still affect how readers interpret the article, even when the text is labeled as separate from newsroom work.

What the incident says about AI-generated “different views”
AI-generated perspective features face a particular challenge: they must distinguish between genuine disagreement and claims that distort a well-documented record. On a topic such as the Klan’s history, a framing that treats minimization as a neutral alternative can create false equivalence. “Balance” is not achieved simply by placing opposing-sounding statements beside one another.
The episode also put editorial accountability in focus. Because the material appeared without pre-publication journalist review, responsibility for catching a misleading passage depended on the feature’s design, safeguards and correction process—not on a reporter editing each generated answer in advance. The reported removal showed that the passage could be taken down, but the cited accounts do not detail a broader review or correction policy.

Readers also questioned the political labeling itself. A single left-to-right scale can compress complicated arguments into a simple category, and a March 5 letter to the Times criticized the labels as reductive and the AI-generated links as unreliable. A viewpoint label is therefore best understood as the feature’s characterization of an article’s framing, sources and arguments—not an objective measurement of its truth or quality.
