Online criticism reported afterward focused on production and whether the setlist gave enough space to the Tension albums. Contemporary reviews, by contrast, described a career-spanning show and an enthusiastic crowd. Those accounts address different questions: what some commenters expected from the tour, and how reviewers experienced the concert.
What sparked the online criticism?
In a report published on 17 February 2025, PerthNow described social-media complaints about the RAC Arena show’s production and setlist. Some commenters wanted the tour to focus more clearly on Minogue’s albums Tension and Tension II; PerthNow estimated that songs from the two records made up roughly one fifth of the set.
The article reproduced anonymous comments including “we deserve more,” a complaint that the tour “feels like a kindergarten show,” and praise for earlier X and Aphrodite tours as “mind-blowing and amazing.” These are examples of remarks PerthNow reported, not statements from identified concertgoers or a representative measure of audience opinion. PerthNow also said that some negative commenters had not attended the show and did not live in Australia; that is the publication’s characterization, not an independently verified account of every commenter.
The criticism therefore points to an expectation gap: some commenters wanted a newer-album-centered concert, while the promoter and reviewers presented the show as a journey across Minogue’s catalogue. That distinction matters when weighing online reactions against descriptions of the live event.

What happened at the Perth show?
A sellout opening night
The Perth concert was the first night of the global Tension Tour. Promoter Frontier Touring reported that the show sold out, with 13,500 people in attendance. That is the promoter’s reported figure, rather than an independently audited count.
A long, broad setlist
PerthNow reported that Minogue performed 32 songs over more than two hours. It also reported that she debuted “last night i dreamt i fell in love” in Perth and included familiar songs such as “The Loco-Motion,” “On a Night Like This” and “I Should Be So Lucky.” PerthNow compared the reported 32-song set with 26-song setlists on the 2019 Golden Tour and 2011 Aphrodite tour; those counts and the comparison are the publication’s reporting.

A community-maintained setlist.fm record lists songs from different points in Minogue’s catalogue, including “Lights Camera Action,” “Good As Gone,” “The Loco-Motion,” “Breathe,” “Spinning Around” and “Padam Padam.” It categorizes “Lights Camera Action” and “Good As Gone” under Tension II. The list offers a useful cross-check on the range of material, but it is not an official setlist record.
Reviewers described an engaged crowd
The Music’s review described an excited audience, newer songs landing with the crowd, and a B-stage segment featuring requests and older material. The Guardian’s review characterized the concert as moving among several Kylie eras and described the Perth crowd as exceptionally loud. These are reviewers’ observations, not results from a survey of attendees.

How to weigh the backlash against the performance
The available accounts do not produce one objective verdict on whether the show succeeded. They describe different measures of success and different evidence:
| Question | What the accounts say | What that establishes |
|---|---|---|
| How much did the set focus on the newest albums? | PerthNow reported that Tension and Tension II songs made up roughly one fifth of the set. | That helps explain why listeners expecting a newer-album emphasis might object; it does not measure how representative those commenters were. |
| How much of Minogue’s catalogue did the show cover? | PerthNow reported a 32-song set with legacy hits; reviewers described a career-spanning performance. | The concert was presented and reviewed as a broad catalogue show rather than a set confined to the two latest albums. |
| How did the audience respond in the arena? | The Music and The Guardian described an enthusiastic, loud crowd. | Those reviews provide qualitative impressions of the room, not polling or a direct rebuttal of online criticism. |
| Was the production a success? | PerthNow reported production complaints; the contemporary reviews supplied here emphasize audience energy, set structure and the range of material. | The sources do not provide a standardized production assessment or comparable budget with which to settle the disagreement. |
On the evidence available, the clearest achievement was the scale and breadth of the opening-night performance: a promoter-reported sellout, a long set spanning eras, and favorable reviewers’ descriptions of audience energy. That does not erase complaints about production or the balance of newer songs. It shows why online criticism and positive live reviews can coexist without either being a full measure of the concert.
