Kyle Shilling, a Widjubal man of the Bundjalung Nation, was announced in December 2022 as joining Home and Away in the role of Mali Hudson, a local in Summer Bay. Shilling acknowledged the news in an Instagram statement reproduced by SBS NITV: “Stoked to be a part of the amazing family/team of @homeandaway,”
Who is Mali Hudson?
Mali is the character Shilling was cast to play. In a later interview with National Indigenous Times, Shilling described him as “Family-oriented, loving, caring, cheeky, culturally driven.” The profile reported that producers created the role after responding to Shilling’s personality during auditions; he had auditioned for more than one role. National Indigenous Times published that account on 29 March 2023.

SBS NITV describes Shilling as a Widjubal man of the Bundjalung Nation. 7NEWS also uses the spelling “Widjubal.” Shilling’s connection to the Tweed area was noted in an ABC North Coast Breakfast segment published on 22 March 2023.
Why was his casting significant?
Consultation on Mali’s character
7NEWS reported that producers worked with an Aboriginal script consultant on Mali’s conception and storylines. SBS NITV also reported the consultation. Neither report names the consultant, and the coverage does not establish the precise extent of the consultant’s influence.
Shilling’s perspective on seeing himself represented
In an interview with PerthNow, Shilling reflected on not seeing himself represented on television as a child. He said: “If I had seen someone like me on a popular TV show when I was a kid, I would have been more driven as a young person to want to better myself and explore acting.” He also imagined how a character like Mali might have affected his younger self: “Looking back on my 10-year-old self, if I had seen someone like Mali Hudson on such a big series, I would have wanted to be him.” These are Shilling’s reflections, rather than a measure of the character’s impact on audiences. PerthNow published the interview on 5 December 2022.
An ABC Listen program description published on 22 March 2023 characterized Mali’s casting as the soap’s first role for an Indigenous actor. That is the milestone as framed by the dated segment, not a broader claim about the history of Indigenous representation across the series.

Shilling’s performing arts background
SBS NITV’s 6 December 2022 report describes Shilling as a theatre actor, dancer and rapper. It says he joined Bangarra Dance Theatre in 2015, performs as BLACX and had been featured on Triple J Unearthed. Those details offer context for his creative work at the time of the casting announcement; they are not a complete or current career biography.
