Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky were vacationing in Aspen with their family in 2023 when they learned that news of their separation was already public. In later accounts, Umansky recalled a rush of calls and messages while the family was about to enter a river; their daughter Alexia remembered discovering an article while paddleboarding and seeing her mother react. The family had not planned to tell the daughters before the news broke.
What happened in Aspen
In a March 20, 2024 preview of Buying Beverly Hills season two, Netflix Tudum described the family as being in Aspen when the separation story became public. Umansky recalled that the family was about to get into a river when their phones began receiving calls and messages. He said, “We were about to get into the river [in Aspen], and all of a sudden all of our phones just started going — we’re like, ‘Oh, my God.’” Netflix Tudum’s account presents the moment through the family’s recollections and footage from the show.
Alexia Umansky recalled a related detail: “I first found out about the article, we were paddle boarding with my family in Aspen.” She also remembered noticing her mother’s expression change as Mauricio received calls and texts. That is Alexia’s recollection of the episode, not an independent timestamp for exactly when the article first appeared. Netflix Tudum’s coverage of Alexia’s account records her perspective.
They had not planned to tell their daughters yet
Umansky said he and Richards were not prepared to discuss the relationship with their children before the news reached them publicly: “[Kyle and I] weren’t ready to talk about it. We weren’t ready to even tell the kids about it.” His comments describe the family’s state of preparation at the time; they do not identify who first brought the story to the press.

What the couple said about the separation
In July 2023, after reports surfaced, Richards and Umansky issued a joint statement saying they had experienced a difficult year, loved and respected each other, and were not divorcing at that time. The Los Angeles Times reproduced their words: “Yes, we have had a rough year. The most challenging one of our marriage.” The statement also asked people not to create false stories.
Later, Richards told Andy Cohen that the separation “originated from me,” according to the Los Angeles Times’ October 26, 2023 report. She also described the distress the public news caused her children and family. That account adds her perspective on the decision, but does not change the couple’s distinction between separation and divorce.

The story became a family conversation on camera
Netflix Tudum’s March 20, 2024 preview said Buying Beverly Hills season two would include the family discussing the separation on camera for the first time. The season was scheduled to return March 22, 2024. The Aspen moment and the later filmed conversation are separate parts of the story: the first was the family learning the news had become public; the second was their subsequent discussion in the show.

Bravo reported in May 2026 that Richards said neither she nor Umansky had filed divorce paperwork. In an August 6, 2026 report, Bravo quoted Richards saying they get along well and had traveled to Aspen with their daughters for the Fourth of July. That report also recounted her March podcast comments describing them as not legally separated and without paperwork. These are dated descriptions of what Richards said; shared family travel does not establish reconciliation or predict what they may decide later.
