Kyle Gass’s Instagram apology for his July 2024 remark about Donald Trump was later removed, but the reason was not reported. The post’s removal followed Jack Black’s decision to cancel Tenacious D’s remaining tour dates and put future creative plans on hold. Later comments from both musicians pointed to a possible return, but neither established a date.
What did Kyle Gass say about Trump?
At a Tenacious D concert at Sydney’s ICC Theatre on July 14, 2024, Jack Black asked Gass to make a birthday wish. Gass replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time.” The remark referred to the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the previous day. ABC News Australia reported that video of the Sydney exchange was shared online.

What did Gass’s apology say?
Gass posted an apology on Instagram in July. Rolling Stone UK quoted him saying: “The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake.” The outlet later reported that the post had been removed.

Why did Kyle Gass delete the apology post?
The reason is unknown. Rolling Stone UK reported the removal and explicitly said the reason was unclear. The available reporting does not establish whether Gass, someone acting for him, or another person removed it, or what prompted the removal. It should not be treated as evidence that he withdrew or changed the apology.
What happened to Tenacious D’s tour?
After a Newcastle concert was postponed, Black said he had been blindsided by Gass’s remark. He wrote, “I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.” On July 16, Black said: “After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold.” The remaining Australian dates were cancelled, as ABC News Australia reported.

Did Tenacious D break up?
The statements in the immediate aftermath put the tour and future creative plans on hold; they did not announce a permanent breakup. In August 2024, Black told Variety, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times, “These things take time sometimes,” and “we’ll be back when it feels right.” That was an expression of intent, not a scheduled comeback announcement.
A January 22, 2026 retrospective interview report by Louder said Gass reflected on the backlash and expected the duo to return. That later outlook likewise did not provide a tour date or announce a specific release. The Los Angeles Times report and Louder’s January 2026 report document those later comments.
