Russell described the exchange as a darkly playful reflection of their characters: Doc Holliday is “all about death,” while Wyatt Earp is “all about life.”
What gifts did Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer exchange?
Russell recounted the story in GQ’s “Iconic Characters” interview. He said he asked his driver to get a picture of Kilmer’s holster, gun, hat and chair, with Kilmer’s name on the chair. Russell then gave Kilmer a plot at Boot Hill, the cemetery associated with Tombstone, Arizona.

Russell said Kilmer’s gift to him was “an acre of land overlooking Boot Hill.” The account describes the gifts as an exchange between the actors; it does not independently establish property transfers or cemetery records.
Why did Russell call the gifts fitting?
Russell connected the joke to the roles they played in the 1993 Western: he was Wyatt Earp and Kilmer was Doc Holliday. As Russell put it in the GQ interview, “Doc Holiday is all about death, [chuckles] but Wyatt’s all about life.” The transcript spells Holliday as “Holiday” in this quotation.

What did Kilmer say about the exchange?
A chapter of Making of Tombstone: Behind the Scenes of a Classic Modern Western recounts Kilmer’s version: “I got him a place to live and he got me a place to die.” The chapter also describes Kilmer’s framed picture of his chair and gives a cemetery plot number. Those additional details belong to the book’s account, not Russell’s GQ interview, and are not independent confirmation of land or cemetery records.
