Kuberaa has a compelling premise and a strong central performance, but its 182-minute story struggles to make its twists and moral argument feel convincing. The reviews disagree on how much its social purpose and mass-entertainment energy compensate for the drag: Scroll finds the plotting overextended, while The Indian Express sees a distinctive film with meaningful ambitions and flaws.
What is Kuberaa about?
Directed and co-written by Sekhar Kammula, Kuberaa brings together a young beggar, Deva, a wealthy businessman, and former investigator Deepak in a scheme shaped by money laundering, political influence, and an oil-resource deal. The official film site describes Deva as being drawn into the plan before becoming a target of the people behind it. Dhanush plays Deva, Nagarjuna Akkineni plays Deepak, and the principal cast also includes Rashmika Mandanna and Jim Sarbh. The official film site provides the synopsis and character information.
The premise sets up a collision between extreme wealth and people living on the street. That contrast gives the story a social frame as well as a thriller engine: the question is not only who controls the money, but who bears the cost of corruption and power.
Where the film works
Dhanush makes Deva resourceful and human
Scroll’s June 20, 2025 review praises Dhanush’s restrained, physical portrayal of Deva, especially moments when he uses what he has learned from street life to improvise and evade pursuers. Rather than making the character’s resourcefulness feel like a conventional action-hero skill, the performance roots it in observation and survival. The Indian Express also praises the cast’s commitment, and Filmfare highlights the lead performances.

The social ambition is more than window dressing
The film connects its laundering plot to class and political influence, asking what happens when the poor are treated as instruments by the powerful. The Indian Express finds difficult questions and a socially minded sensibility in that approach, while still acknowledging missteps. That ambition gives Kuberaa more to work with than a simple chase or conspiracy story.
Why the story loses force
A long runtime magnifies the plotting problems
At 182 minutes, Kuberaa asks viewers to stay with a sprawling chain of events. Scroll describes the setup linking Deva, Deepak, and Neeraj as effective, but argues that contrivances and repeated beats bog the narrative down. The Indian Express likewise says the second half meanders and that repetition stretches the film. The runtime is listed as 3 hours 2 minutes by Rotten Tomatoes, which is an aggregator rather than the film’s distributor. The moral arc is harder to believe than the performances
Scroll’s central objection is that the film’s familiar poor-against-rich conflict becomes overcomplicated by implausible turns. The review also finds Sameera awkwardly inserted into the plot and argues that the story leans too heavily on an idealized image of poverty. Those choices weaken the credibility of the film’s movement from temptation toward moral resolution: the intended point about exploitation is clear, but the plotting does not always earn it.
How the reviews differ
The disagreement is less about whether Kuberaa has serious intentions than about whether it makes those intentions work as drama. Scroll’s headline frames it as an “Overstretched yarn about temptation and salvation beggars belief,” and its review regards the implausibility and length as fundamental problems. The Indian Express, by contrast, calls it a distinctive, socially minded mass-entertainment experience despite its uneven second half. Filmfare also recognizes the lead performances while assessing a story that buckles under its own weight. These are different judgments of the same trade-off: ambition and committed acting on one side, a sprawling and sometimes strained narrative on the other. Should you watch Kuberaa?
It is most likely to work for viewers who value Dhanush’s character performance, socially conscious themes, and an expansive commercial-drama style enough to accept an overlong, uneven plot. If tight pacing and plausible turns are essential, the film’s second-half drift and contrivances may outweigh its strongest elements. The balance depends on whether its performances and concern with class and corruption can carry a story that repeatedly asks for patience.
