Kristen Hayes, widow of former NHL player Jimmy Hayes, shared a brief tribute after brothers Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau were killed in New Jersey on August 29, 2024. The following morning, she posted a photograph of Jimmy with Johnny and wrote: “Unimaginable news this morning. Heartbroken. There are no words.”
What Kristen Hayes posted
According to People reporter Natasha Dye, Hayes shared the message on Instagram Stories on Friday, August 30, 2024. The image showed Jimmy Hayes with Johnny Gaudreau and had originally been posted by the Missin’ Curfew podcast account. Hayes added a broken-heart emoji to her words.
The brothers’ deaths had been confirmed after they were killed while biking in New Jersey the previous day. The contemporary account reported that they were struck by a vehicle.
Why the loss was personal to the Hayes family
Jimmy Hayes and Johnny Gaudreau had played hockey at Boston College. Dye’s report also described Johnny as a close friend of Jimmy’s brother, Kevin Hayes, and said Johnny had developed a close relationship with the Hayes family. The photograph and Hayes’s short message reflected those personal ties.

Context about Jimmy Hayes
Jimmy Hayes died at his Massachusetts home in August 2021. Dye’s report noted that a later report confirmed cocaine and fentanyl in his system, and that his son Beau had been born three months before his death. That background helps explain the Hayes family’s own experience of loss, but does not define Jimmy’s life or his hockey relationships.
The August 30, 2024 account said driver Sean M. Higgins had been charged with two counts of death by auto and that the investigation was ongoing at the time. That is a dated description, not an update on the case’s current status.
