Their banter and performances meet a story about an agnostic podcaster and a rabbi whose attraction has to contend with religion, family and work. The show’s Jewish representation has also drawn criticism, making it worth separating the fictional romance from any claim that it speaks for Judaism as a whole.
What is Nobody Wants This about?
Created by Erin Foster, the Los Angeles romantic comedy follows Joanne (Bell), an outspoken agnostic podcaster who turns bad dates and short relationships into material, and Noah (Brody), a newly single rabbi she meets at a dinner party through a mutual friend. Netflix’s series overview frames their connection amid differences in outlook and pressure from their families.
The central tension is not simply whether two people are attracted to each other. Noah’s work and religious commitments, Joanne’s beliefs and the expectations around them all shape what a shared future might require. In season one, the couple confronts the fact that Joanne is not Jewish and the question of whether she is ready to convert. The season guide presents conversion as a consequential character and relationship question, not a quick fix for the couple’s problems; the cultural and family pressures remain even as Noah signals he is not ready to give up on the relationship. Why do Bell and Brody feel familiar together?
Two actors linked to early-2000s teen dramas
Bell is closely associated with Veronica Mars, where she played the teenage detective, while Brody played Seth Cohen on The O.C. The Los Angeles Times describes them as actors who rose to fame on early-aughts teen dramas. That history gives the pairing an easy note of millennial-era recognition for viewers who know those shows, but it does not establish that everyone watched them—or that those roles created the chemistry in this series.

Familiarity is not the same as onscreen chemistry
The actors had worked together before, but their earlier collaboration was brief and did not guarantee that they would click as romantic leads. In a Netflix Tudum interview, Brody described the pairing as an open question: their timing and the way the characters were written might or might not work onscreen. His account is useful precisely because it treats chemistry as something the production had to make convincing, not an automatic result of casting two familiar performers.
What makes the romance work beyond “chemistry”?
Brody credits Foster’s writing and the characters’ likability alongside the actors’ performances. He singled out the dialogue—“Erin wrote some great banter”—but also noted that chemistry alone would not make viewers root for characters whose behavior put them off. That distinction matters: a couple can have lively exchanges and still fail to engage if the story gives viewers little reason to care about how they treat each other.

Brody described the series as a grown-up romantic comedy interested in the day-to-day reality of a relationship after the initial attraction. That is his description of the show’s approach, rather than a universal rule about what adult romance must be. In practice, the premise lets flirtation sit beside questions of family, belief and work instead of using attraction as the only engine of the plot.
The Los Angeles Times interview also discusses the finale’s uncertainty about whether the world around Joanne and Noah will allow them to be together. Bell interpreted that uncertainty as realistic to relationships. It is her reading of the ending, not a guarantee of what the couple’s future will be.

How does the series handle Jewish representation?
The show’s romantic premise also makes Jewish identity central to the plot, and its depiction has prompted criticism. The Associated Press reported on criticism and think pieces about antisemitic tropes, particularly involving Jewish women, including Noah’s mother and sister-in-law. The debate is not resolved by the creators’ intentions or by one viewer’s response; it involves how the portrayal lands for people with different experiences of Jewish life.
AP quoted Rabbi Elan Babchuck, executive vice president of the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, who initially described discomfort with aspects of the first episode. After watching the season, he said, “I celebrate the show. I think representation matters across the board, even when it’s in flawed form.” His response combines appreciation for visibility with acknowledgment that representation can be imperfect.

Brody told AP, “Obviously, one show or group of characters can’t stand in for a whole civilization.” Foster likewise told AP that she understood why Jewish women objected to the portrayal and said that harm was not her intention. Intention, impact and the diversity of Jewish audiences are separate considerations; a single fictional family cannot stand in for Jewish people or settle criticism of the show.
Foster has described the story as drawing on her own love story and adult conversion to Judaism. In a Netflix Tudum interview, she said she wanted to tell a Jewish story from the perspective of someone who chose Judaism as an adult. That explains one source of the series’ perspective; it does not make the show a guide to Jewish belief, practice or the varied experiences of Jewish women.

What was the show’s reported first-season reach?
In Associated Press reporting dated October 22, 2025, Netflix said the first season had reached 57 million views in three months and spent six weeks on Netflix’s Global English Top 10 TV List. Those are the platform’s reported figures for the first season at that time, not current totals or independently audited audience measurements. Bell told AP, “I think we just kind of won the lottery with how ready people were for this kind of story.”
