The 2024 action thriller is an origin story for Sergei Kravinoff, the Marvel Comics hunter, and is now listed by Sony as available on Blu-ray and digital. Here’s what to know about its story, cast, place in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, reception and viewing options.
What is Kraven the Hunter about?
Sony describes the film as an origin story shaped by Sergei Kravinoff’s relationship with his father, Nikolai. In the movie, Sergei grows into a vigilante who hunts criminals. The film also features his half-brother Dmitri, known as Chameleon, as well as Rhino and the Foreigner.

How is Kraven related to Spider-Man and the MCU?
Kraven is a Spider-Man adversary from Marvel Comics, but the 2024 film is part of Sony’s Spider-Man character universe. That label does not make it a direct entry in the Tom Holland-led Marvel Cinematic Universe films. The movie’s premise centers on Kraven and his family rather than presenting him as a Spider-Man co-star.

What is Kraven’s history in Marvel Comics?
Kraven and Chameleon were created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Chameleon debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 in March 1963; Kraven followed in issue #15 in August 1964. The comics later established the two as half-brothers in J. M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck’s Kraven’s Last Hunt storyline in 1987. That storyline is a natural next read for viewers curious about Kraven’s comic-book history, though editions and availability vary.
How long is it, and what is its rating?
The runtime is 127 minutes (2 hours, 7 minutes). In the United States, the film is rated R for strong bloody violence and language. The rating and content are worth considering before choosing it for younger viewers.

How was the film received?
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 15% Tomatometer based on 161 critic reviews and a 72% Popcornmeter based on more than 2,500 verified ratings when accessed in 2026. The gap shows that the two groups responded differently on that platform; these changing aggregates are not an objective verdict and may shift as ratings or reviews change.
Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy gave a sharply negative review, criticizing the story and effects. That is one critic’s assessment, not a substitute for the broader range of viewer responses or an invitation to treat a review score as a measure of whether you will enjoy the film.

Spoilers: what happens in the film?
Spoilers ahead. The film ties Sergei’s transformation into Kraven to the influence of his father, Nikolai, and the family conflict that follows. Calypso becomes part of Sergei’s story after the childhood lion encounter, while Dmitri’s role connects the film’s family drama to his identity as Chameleon. The film also brings in Rhino and the Foreigner as figures in Kraven’s world. Their appearances do not by themselves confirm a sequel or a crossover with Spider-Man or the MCU.
