The Netflix hit behind the headline is KPop Demon Hunters, the animated musical directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, which launched on Netflix on June 20, 2025. The “almost 159 million” figure comes from a T3 article published August 15, 2025, about eight weeks after launch. It was a snapshot of a film that was still climbing. As of October 8, 2026, Netflix’s all-time film ranking lists the title first with 325.1 million views, but that number measures something narrower. Netflix also reports more than 600 million cumulative views. These are different measures, and the sections below explain how they fit together.
What the film is
Netflix’s film summary describes Rumi, Mira, and Zoey as K-pop superstars who use secret powers to protect their fans from supernatural threats. The film mixes K-pop performance, fantasy action, and comedy. Netflix credits Kang and Appelhans as directors and identifies Sony Pictures Animation as a production partner. Most of the records discussed below are Netflix-reported viewing or chart figures, not independent audits.
Where the 159 million figure comes from
T3’s August 15, 2025 report said the film had nearly 159 million viewers, was Netflix’s most popular animated film, and ranked fourth among all Netflix movies. Its forecast that the film might pass the titles above it was overtaken within weeks. Netflix’s Top 10 reporting around August 26, 2025 cited 236 million total views and called the film its most popular movie at that point.
The 159 million number is therefore a mid-August 2025 reading. It should not be presented as a total, and it should not be compared with figures from later dates.

Netflix’s current all-time ranking
Netflix’s Global all-time movie list, checked October 8, 2026, ranks KPop Demon Hunters first. The list uses one metric only: each title’s total views in its first 91 days on the service. The comparison titles below are placed on that same list.

The gap between 325.1 million and 159 million is not a correction of the T3 article. It reflects a later measurement window and a fixed ranking method.

Why the view counts differ
Each figure answers a different question. Compare them only within the same definition.

The 91-day ranking is a fixed early window, so it can rank a title without including its later audience. The cumulative figure covers the whole period since launch, which is why it is larger. The Nielsen minutes use a different unit and a different period again, so they should not be divided into or set against the view counts.

Records beyond the view totals
Global Top 10 streak
Netflix reports that the film spent 52 consecutive weeks in its Global Top 10, which it describes as the longest such run on the service. The previous record was 20 weeks, held by Extraordinary Attorney Woo, according to Netflix. Netflix also said, in its June 2026 anniversary account, that the film was in the Top 10 in all 93 countries where Netflix publishes Top 10 lists and reached number one in 76 of them.
Soundtrack milestones
Netflix’s 2025 coverage says the soundtrack became the first with four songs in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 at the same time. Its June 2026 anniversary report adds two dated points: more than 15 billion worldwide soundtrack streams, and eight weeks at number one on the Hot 100 for “Golden.” These describe past chart activity. They are not current chart positions.

Awards
At the 2026 Academy Awards the film won Animated Feature, and “Golden” won Best Original Song. Netflix also reports that the song won the 2026 Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media. Attribute these wins to Netflix’s own retrospective if you cite them.

In an October 21, 2025 announcement, Netflix’s Chief Marketing Officer, Marian Lee, said: “KPop Demon Hunters unleashed a global fan frenzy — we’re talking dancing, singing, and more screaming than anyone was emotionally prepared for.” That is an executive’s characterization of audience enthusiasm, not an independent measurement. Netflix’s sources describe the records above but do not establish what caused them. Viewing totals, chart longevity, soundtrack streams, and awards are reported side by side, and no source in this set ties any one factor to the view totals.

How to cite these numbers
- Name the measure. “325.1 million views” should always be written as views in the first 91 days on Netflix’s all-time film list.
- Give the date. The 159 million figure is from August 2025, the 325.1 million figure from an October 8, 2026 check of the chart, and the 600 million figure from the June 18, 2026 anniversary report.
- Name the source. Netflix figures are company-reported. Nielsen minutes are U.S.-only and calendar-year. T3’s number is a secondary report of the August 2025 snapshot.
- Do not add or subtract figures from different measures to create a combined total.
Chart positions and totals on Netflix’s pages change, so confirm the current ranking before publishing any figure as present tense.
