Kowloon Generic Romance is a romance anime with a mystery at its center: real-estate agent Reiko Kujirai falls for her colleague Hajime Kudō, then finds a photograph suggesting they were engaged—something she cannot remember. That conflict makes the series about more than whether the two will get together: it raises questions about memory, identity and the life Reiko may have lost.
What is Kowloon Generic Romance about?
Adapted from Jun Mayuzuki’s manga, the anime follows Reiko Kujirai, an adult real-estate agent in a stylized version of Kowloon, and her growing love for fellow agent Hajime Kudō. The story changes course when Reiko discovers a photograph in Kudō’s desk showing the pair as engaged. She has no memory of that relationship, leaving her to make sense of the image and what it implies about her own past. 98mag’s discussion of the series describes this photograph as the disruption that sets its mystery in motion.
Is it a romance or a mystery?
It is both. Reiko’s feelings for Kudō provide the romantic thread, while the photograph creates an unanswered question that complicates those feelings. The series’ setting also matters: Kowloon is more than a backdrop for dates and workplace scenes. The 98mag article reads the city as part of the emotional story, connecting its atmosphere to nostalgia, identity and uncertainty about what is real. Those are critical interpretations of the work, not official genre labels.
The result is a romance whose central tension is not simply whether two colleagues will become a couple. Reiko must also reckon with the possibility that the person she is now does not remember an important part of her life. That gives the love story a reflective, unsettled quality rather than presenting it as a straightforward romantic comedy.

How does the anime compare with the live-action adaptation?
The 98mag article identifies both an anime and a Japanese live-action adaptation, and describes their emphasis differently: the anime leans more toward mystery, while the live-action version leans more toward romance. That is the article’s characterization, not a verified scene-by-scene comparison. The evidence available here does not establish current release status or where either adaptation can be watched.
