Kodak Black, whose legal name is Bill Kapri, was released from jail on February 21, 2024, after U.S. District Judge Jose E. Martinez sentenced him to time served for a federal probation violation. That was separate from a Broward County drug-possession charge dismissed earlier that month; the dismissal was not the reason for the federal sentence.
Why Kodak Black was released in February 2024
The Associated Press reported that Martinez sentenced Kapri to time served for violating probation in an unrelated federal case. After the sentence, Kapri was freed from jail. The AP account does not identify the probation violation as arising from the Broward County possession case. Associated Press coverage of the release.

How the separate Broward County charge ended
Plantation police arrested Kapri in December 2023 after finding him asleep at the wheel with white powder around his mouth, according to the AP. Authorities initially reported a positive cocaine test, but a later laboratory test identified oxycodone. Kapri had obtained an oxycodone prescription in July 2022.
On February 9, 2024, Broward Circuit Judge Barbara Duffy dismissed the possession charge. The AP reported that Duffy found prosecutors could not refute or negate the evidence that a pharmacy had filled Kapri’s oxycodone prescription. This state-court decision was distinct from the federal judge’s later time-served sentence. CBS Miami’s report on the dismissal.

What the reporting said about other cases
2022 oxycodone-trafficking case
When the AP published its February 2024 report, it said a separate 2022 oxycodone-trafficking case remained ongoing. That is a status reported at that time, not confirmation of the case’s present status.
Later 2026 proceedings
In a September 8, 2026 report, CBS Miami said a Broward judge dismissed charges stemming from a February 2026 traffic stop. The same report said the separate Orange County drug case had not yet been formally charged at that point. In a later 2026 report, the AP said Kapri pleaded not guilty in a felony MDMA-trafficking case, requested a jury trial, and had bond set at $75,000. These proceedings are separate from the 2024 release and should not be treated as its cause.
