The malfunction occurred on Sol Spin, a ride in Fiesta Village at Knott’s Berry Farm. The park described the problem as “technical difficulties” that caused the ride to stop mid-cycle. The Associated Press described Sol Spin as having six independently spinning arms and rising more than six stories, based on the park’s website.
In a statement reproduced by ABC7, Knott’s Berry Farm said: “At approximately 2:00 pm, the Sol Spin ride experienced technical difficulties causing the ride to stop mid cycle,” and, “We followed the ride manufacturer’s and Knott’s emergency procedures to safely evacuate the 22 guests by 4:30.”
How long were riders waiting, and how were they evacuated?
The ride stopped at approximately 2 p.m.; the park said all 22 guests had been evacuated by 4:30 p.m. Contemporary reports described park personnel stabilizing the ride’s arms and lowering it during the response. Those descriptions do not establish what caused the malfunction. The park said staff followed the ride manufacturer’s and Knott’s emergency procedures.
