1. MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA: best for eligible current chapters
MANGA Plus is an official Shueisha service. Its FAQ describes the service as free and official, and says it provides manga from Weekly Shonen Jump and other magazines at the same time as their Japanese release. See the MANGA Plus FAQ.
Its First Read Free feature is more specific than an unlimited free archive: in the app, eligible ongoing English simulpub chapters can generally be read once for free. After you close a chapter, rereading it requires a subscription. Some chapters use tickets, and completed series and re-editions are not eligible. Check the First Read Free rules for details and exceptions.
Best for: Readers following eligible ongoing series who mainly want to keep up with new chapters. It is not a guarantee of free, repeat access to every chapter or every series.

2. VIZ and Shonen Jump: free chapters plus paid digital libraries
VIZ offers two distinct reading libraries. Shonen Jump advertises free chapters and a digital vault of more than 20,000 chapters for US$3.99 per month. The VIZ Manga app advertises weekly free chapters and more than 10,000 chapters for US$1.99 per month. VIZ lists offline downloads for both; VIZ Manga also advertises syncing and digital volume purchases. VIZ says VIZ Manga is available on the web and through its mobile app; its VIZ Manga FAQ also lists operating-system requirements. Because Shonen Jump and VIZ Manga are separate libraries, search the exact series in the relevant service rather than assuming a subscription includes both catalogs.
Best for: Readers whose series are in one of VIZ’s libraries and who want a larger subscription catalog alongside selected free chapters. Check the series, price, and availability for your region first.

4. Crunchyroll Manga: for eligible Premium members in the United States and Canada
Crunchyroll says Manga reading is available to eligible Premium members in the United States and Canada, subject to account conditions. Ultimate Fan access includes it; Fan and Mega Fan subscribers on the website may have an add-on option. If the subscription is billed through Apple or Google, manage the relevant subscription through that store. A free Crunchyroll account can browse titles but cannot read them. Check the provider’s Crunchyroll Manga access requirements before relying on it.
Best for: Eligible Premium subscribers in those two countries who want to see whether Crunchyroll’s manga catalog includes a particular series. It is not a free-reading service for users with only a free account.
5. Hoopla: library borrowing where your library participates
Hoopla promotes manga borrowing with a library card, but access depends on whether your local library participates and licenses the title. Check your library’s Hoopla catalog and its loan policy rather than assuming a card works everywhere. Hoopla’s 2025 manga flyer describes its library-card route.

Best for: Readers with a participating library whose digital collection includes the manga they want. Availability and borrowing terms are set by the library and its collection.

- Search the exact title. Use the service’s catalog, not just its general description, to confirm the series is available.
- Check the chapter you need. A free first read, a weekly free chapter, and a paid back-catalog are different kinds of access.
- Confirm your region and account. Licensing, plan eligibility, and availability can depend on country, subscription billing method, or library participation.
- Compare the access model with your reading habits. For current chapters, look at MANGA Plus eligibility; for a larger library, compare VIZ, Shonen Jump, or MANGA Plus MAX; for library borrowing, check Hoopla.
If you cannot find a series on one service, that does not establish that it is unavailable everywhere. It means that service is not a confirmed option for that title; check another licensed catalog or your library.
