Kiss the Ground is an advocacy-oriented 2020 documentary about regenerative agriculture and soil health. Directed and produced by Josh and Rebecca Tickell and narrated by Woody Harrelson, it argues that rebuilding soil can benefit ecosystems, food systems and the climate. Its broad climate claims are the film’s thesis, not a settled summary of the scientific debate.
What is Kiss the Ground about?
The documentary follows farmers, ranchers, scientists, change-makers and Indigenous leaders as it presents soil stewardship as a response to environmental problems. Its central case is that farming practices that rebuild soil can support climate mitigation and ecosystem health.
The official film site describes soil as “the missing piece of the climate puzzle” and says soil regeneration can restore ecosystems and create abundant food supplies. Those are the film’s promotional claims. Its more sweeping suggestion that soil regeneration could rapidly or completely stabilize the climate should not be mistaken for an established scientific conclusion. What does the film mean by regenerative agriculture?
The film and the Kiss the Ground organization emphasize improving soil health and connecting that effort to wider benefits for land and food systems. The materials do not establish one universally standardized package of practices that every farm must follow. “Regenerative agriculture” can therefore refer to different approaches in different places; the label alone does not tell viewers which practices were used or what outcomes were measured.

To assess a particular claim or farm, useful questions include which practices were adopted, what soil and carbon outcomes were measured, under what climate and geographic conditions, and over what time period. It also matters whether carbon storage lasts, how the whole farm’s emissions and other trade-offs are counted, and what costs or barriers farmers face.
How does the film’s climate argument compare with scientific cautions?
A 2026 article in Global Environmental Change, “Champions of the soil: Environmental vanguard visions in the post-truth era,” analyzes Kiss the Ground and its sequel. Its abstract argues that the films present regenerative agriculture as a simple answer to climate change, chronic disease and other crises while giving insufficient attention to scientific doubts and evidence gaps. It highlights uncertainty around agricultural soil-carbon sequestration, barriers to farmer adoption, and the relationship between soil health and human nutrition. A 2021 commentary in Biogeochemistry also discusses the documentary and cautions against overly warm or simplified narratives about soil-carbon sequestration. It is a commentary, not a systematic review. Together, these sources provide context for evaluating the film’s presentation; neither, by itself, resolves the wider scientific questions. Soil-carbon storage should not be treated as guaranteed, unlimited, or a substitute for reducing emissions. The film can introduce viewers to soil-focused farming ideas, but its expansive climate language needs to be read as advocacy rather than as a complete account of the evidence.

The official site currently points viewers to Prime Video and says the film is available worldwide there. It also offers free streaming and curriculum resources for students, teachers, educators and school administrators. Is there a companion book?

Who may find the documentary useful?
The film may suit viewers looking for an accessible introduction to regenerative agriculture, soil health and the argument that farming choices can have environmental consequences. It is less suited as a stand-alone guide to the full scientific debate: viewers who want to evaluate its claims should distinguish the film’s thesis from the uncertainties and evidence gaps raised by later analysis.
