His fiction could be ribald and exuberant, but it also turned to history, religion and contemporary politics to challenge easy assumptions. The range is part of what makes his career difficult to reduce to a single label.
A bilingual career across fiction, theatre and film
Nagarkar was born in Bombay, now Mumbai, in 1942. His first novel, Saat Sakkam Trechalis, was published in Marathi in 1974; Katha’s English edition is titled Seven Sixes Are Forty-Three. Two decades later, Ravan and Eddie became his first English novel. He also worked as a playwright and screenwriter, making his career one that crossed languages and forms rather than following a single literary path.
His comic style was not an escape from serious subjects. In an interview with The Indian Express, Nagarkar explained: “Humour allows me to indulge in ribaldry and bawdiness which are important for the health of the mind.” That irreverence could coexist with attention to faith, power and political conflict.
Mumbai life and the comic world of Ravan and Eddie
Set in a Mumbai chawl, Ravan and Eddie follows two boys, one Hindu and one Christian, growing up in close quarters. The novel’s ribald comedy draws on the frictions and absurdities of everyday life, while its central friendship crosses religious lines. Nagarkar returned to that world in The Extras (2012) and Rest in Peace (2015), extending the lives of characters first introduced in his 1994 novel.

History, myth and political argument
Cuckold and the historical imagination
In Cuckold (1997), Nagarkar imagined the life of Bhoj Raj, husband of the poet and devotional singer Meerabai. The novel brings questions of love and worship into a fictional account of the Mewar king’s life, loves and wars. It won the Sahitya Akademi Award in English in 2001, according to Katha’s author biography.
Contemporary politics and social questions
His later books took on modern political and social concerns in different ways. God’s Little Soldier (2006) follows a young Muslim man from Mumbai whose life changes after exposure to fanaticism, using his story to address global terrorism. Jasoda (2018) foregrounds a woman facing the odds associated with post-liberalisation development. In The Arsonist (2019), Nagarkar drew on a version of Kabir as a contemporary political role model.

The stage work Bedtime Stories, written in 1978 and published as a book in 2015, used episodes from the Mahabharata to make a statement that Hindu fundamentalist parties found offensive. Scroll’s obituary reports that performances of the play were banned in Maharashtra for 17 years.
The allegations reported in 2018
In 2018, three women journalists accused Nagarkar on social media of unwelcome physical contact. Scroll reported that he strongly denied the allegations and that they were not withdrawn. The available reporting cited here does not establish an adjudicated finding, so the accusations and his denial should be understood as attributed accounts, not as a legal conclusion.

His final days and the shape of his legacy
Nagarkar died in Mumbai on September 5, 2019. Scroll and The Indian Express reported that he had suffered a massive brain hemorrhage earlier that week. He was 77.
Nagarkar’s work resists a choice between the bawdy and the political, or between urban comedy and historical or mythic subjects. The same writer who made room for ribald humour also used fiction to probe belief, public life and power. His bilingual career, spanning Marathi and English as well as theatre and screenwriting, is central to that breadth.
