Kingdom did not predict COVID-19, and COVID-19 did not inspire it. But when Netflix released season 2 on March 13, 2020, its fictional epidemic, famine, and political failures suddenly felt newly legible. That timing gives the series a strong claim to being one of the most compelling pandemic stories of its moment—not because it foretold a real disease, but because it had already made survival a question of who holds power, who goes hungry, and who is left exposed.
Why did Kingdom resonate during the pandemic?
The overlap was striking: season 2 arrived as COVID-19 was emerging globally, while the series followed an epidemic spreading through Joseon-era Korea. Its threat is supernatural and its setting historical, but the drama’s pressure points are familiar: uncertainty, scarcity, unequal danger, and decisions made by people with authority.
Netflix announced the season 2 premiere on February 6, 2020, setting its global debut for March 13. The announcement described an epidemic, the greed of the Cho family, and Crown Prince Lee Chang’s struggle. The timing supports a retrospective reading of Kingdom as pandemic-era television; it does not establish that audiences broadly received it that way. No audience statistic in the available official and creator sources quantifies a pandemic-era surge or response.
Did Kingdom predict COVID-19?
No. The series’ plague is fictional, and the evidence about its creation points to interests that predate the pandemic. In a Korean Film Council interview published March 11, 2019, screenwriter Kim Eun-hee traced the idea to zombie stories, hunger, famine, and Joseon historical records. She said she wanted to use the genre to explore politics: “I want to address politics through the zombies.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters. The resonance comes from themes that can illuminate a crisis, not from a documented forecast of a particular virus or public-health emergency. Calling the series prophetic would mistake a later historical coincidence for its origin.
How does the epidemic expose power and inequality?
Hunger is more than atmosphere
Kim described imagining zombies as “a form of life full of hunger,” then considering how such creatures might fit a period of extreme famine. That creative starting point ties the infected to deprivation: the catastrophe is not only a threat that arrives from outside society, but also a story about people already living with scarcity.

Political choices shape who survives
The outbreak unfolds alongside a struggle over authority. The series makes rulers’ decisions part of the danger, rather than treating disease as a force that affects everyone equally. In that sense, the epidemic becomes a way to examine responsibility: who controls information and resources, whose safety is prioritized, and who bears the consequences of elite greed.
This is the basis for calling Kingdom one of the best pandemic stories of its era. “Best” is a critical judgment, not a ranking established by awards or audience data. Its strength is the way it makes a crisis legible through institutions and inequality without losing the urgency of a thriller.

Is Kingdom based on a true story?
No. The plague and its infected are fictional. The show draws on Joseon-era history and records as creative context, and Kim has described reading about famine while developing the concept. That is historical inspiration, not a claim that the events or supernatural outbreak happened as depicted.
