Mae retrieves a satellite-access device from the bunker and uses it to reconnect scattered human communities. That reveal changes the balance of power in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: humans are no longer merely isolated remnants, and Noa’s victory over Proximus does not settle the future relationship between the two species.

Mae retrieves a satellite-access device from the bunker and uses it to reconnect scattered human communities. That is the decisive reveal in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ ending. The object is not a weapon and is not the book Mae initially claims to be seeking. It is best described as an encryption key or communications component—something capable of restoring access to a satellite network.

The discovery changes the franchise’s balance of power. Humans are not simply isolated survivors hiding from increasingly organized apes. At least some human communities retain advanced knowledge, functioning technology and the ability to communicate across long distances. Mae has helped reopen that network, but she may also have created the conditions for a new conflict with Noa and the apes.
What happens at the end of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes?
After Raka is swept away while protecting Mae, Mae and Noa are captured and taken to Proximus Caesar’s coastal settlement. Proximus wants them to help open a sealed human bunker. He believes the facility contains weapons and knowledge that can make his empire more powerful.

Mae also wants access to the bunker, but her goal is different. She is looking for technology that can help humanity reconnect and organize. She tells Noa a partial version of the truth because she knows he may refuse to help if he understands the full plan.
Noa eventually agrees to assist her, intending to destroy the bunker after Mae retrieves what she needs. With Soona and Anaya, he places explosives near a dam. Inside the bunker, Mae finds firearms and other remnants of human technology, along with records and images that remind the apes of how humans once imprisoned and exploited other species.
When Proximus captures Soona and demands to know where the weapons are, Mae detonates the explosives. The resulting flood destroys or disables the bunker and turns the escape into a desperate struggle. Proximus attacks Noa, but Noa remembers the song associated with his father and uses it to summon the eagles.
The eagles attack Proximus. He falls from the cliff and disappears. The film does not provide a conventional body confirmation, but the on-screen outcome presents Proximus’s defeat as final within this story. A return is technically possible in the way that almost any unseen death can be revisited, but there is no confirmed evidence in the film’s ending that Proximus survived.

The film never gives the object an official model number or precise technical name. It looks like a modem or communications device, but the safest descriptions are encryption device, communications device or satellite-access key.
Mae brings it to a surviving human settlement built around a satellite array. When the device is connected to the settlement’s computer system, the satellites appear to reactivate. The humans can then contact other surviving intelligent humans around the world.
This is why the object matters more than the bunker’s guns. Proximus sees technology as a means of military domination. Mae sees it as a way to restore coordination among human enclaves. The same human legacy can therefore serve two radically different purposes: empire-building or survival through communication.
Why did Mae lie to Noa?
Mae’s lie is driven by the belief that humanity may not survive unless scattered communities reconnect before ape civilization becomes too powerful. She does not know whether the humans she finds will be peaceful, unified or trustworthy, but she believes that isolation leaves them vulnerable.

Her fear also has a specific source: Noa himself. He learns quickly, understands complex ideas and is capable of uniting a clan. Mae has encountered apes as threats, but Noa is different from the animals and isolated groups she expected to find. He is intelligent enough to understand human technology and influential enough to shape the future of ape society.

That makes Noa both a possible ally and a strategic danger. Mae may sincerely want peace with him while still believing that humanity needs a means of defending itself against him and other apes.
What does the gun mean in the final scene?
Mae returns to Noa with a revolver visible or concealed on her person, but she does not shoot him. The gun represents the possibility that the two species’ farewell is not a genuine resolution. It is a fragile ceasefire.
An earlier version of the scene reportedly made Mae’s intention more explicit by showing her draw the gun while Noa’s back was turned. The released cut is more restrained: the weapon communicates her mistrust without forcing her to become an outright assassin.

Mae’s decision is therefore deliberately ambiguous. She may have considered killing Noa and changed her mind. She may simply want protection in case the meeting turns hostile. Or she may understand that Noa is more valuable as a potential bridge between humans and apes than as a dead enemy. The film leaves all three possibilities open.
Why doesn’t Noa simply forgive Mae?
Noa has just learned that Proximus corrupted Caesar’s teachings to justify forced labor, conquest and ape supremacy. Proximus used Caesar’s name as political propaganda rather than following Caesar’s principles.
But Mae’s actions force Noa to confront a more complicated lesson. Humans can use knowledge and technology to threaten apes just as apes can use physical power to threaten humans. Mae’s flood plan also causes deaths and puts apes at risk because she chooses to destroy the bunker before she can be certain that everyone will escape.
From Mae’s perspective, the sacrifice may be necessary to preserve humanity’s future. From Noa’s perspective, it proves that Mae is prepared to put her species’ survival ahead of the immediate safety of his people. Their goodbye is sincere, but it is not forgiveness and it is not peace.

The gesture suggests that Raka’s compassion and belief in coexistence still influence him. Mae’s gun, meanwhile, shows that she has not abandoned human self-defense. Who is Proximus Caesar really supposed to be?
Proximus is not a continuation of Caesar. He is an ideological counterfeit: a ruler who borrows Caesar’s name, symbols and authority while replacing Caesar’s principles with imperial ambition.

On his way to save Tetsuo, Kaneda runs into a group of anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader. Caesar’s original story was built around questions of dignity, family, freedom and coexistence. Proximus converts that legacy into a justification for domination. He gathers clans under his rule, enslaves apes to build his settlement and treats human technology as a prize that will make him stronger than every rival.

By rejecting Proximus’s interpretation of Caesar, Noa begins to separate Caesar’s actual legacy from the myths later apes have built around it. Raka preserves a compassionate memory of Caesar. Proximus turns Caesar into a symbol of empire. Noa is positioned to form a third interpretation based on what he has personally experienced.
What does Noa’s eagle scene mean?
The eagles connect Noa’s personal history with his emergence as a leader. Earlier in the film, his father’s song is associated with the clan’s relationship to the birds. When Noa remembers and repeats it during his fight with Proximus, he is not merely calling for help; he is reclaiming a part of his family and community’s identity.
The moment also contrasts Noa with Proximus. Proximus tries to command through fear, ideology and physical control. Noa succeeds by remembering a shared tradition and cooperating with another species. The eagles’ attack makes his victory feel like the restoration of a relationship rather than the exercise of ownership.
What does the ending mean for the future?
1. Humans can coordinate again
Mae’s satellite connection expands the story beyond one hidden settlement. Human survivors may now be able to exchange information, locate one another, share scientific knowledge and coordinate responses to threats.
That could lead to diplomacy and trade with ape communities. It could also produce a centralized human movement that wants to reclaim abandoned infrastructure or prevent apes from acquiring advanced technology. Reconnection is not automatically peaceful; it simply gives humans the ability to act collectively again.
2. Ape society still has to decide what unity means
Proximus’s defeat removes the strongest immediate threat, but it does not solve the political problem he created. The clans he gathered, displaced or enslaved must decide whether to follow Noa, return to local independence or seek revenge against those who supported his empire.
Noa has earned authority, but he has not yet established a government or a shared law for every ape group. The next stage of his story may involve building unity without repeating Proximus’s coercion. That is a more difficult task than defeating one ruler.
3. Caesar’s legacy will remain contested
The film presents three versions of Caesar’s legacy. Raka keeps alive a humane and spiritual memory of Caesar. Proximus uses Caesar’s name to legitimize conquest. Noa inherits both accounts and must decide what deserves to survive.

This conflict is likely to continue even if humans and apes avoid open war. Whoever controls the story of Caesar may influence how future ape communities understand leadership, technology and their relationship with humanity.
4. Mae and Noa are possible allies—and possible enemies
The film’s most important future relationship is not simply “apes versus humans.” It is Mae and Noa. Both have reasons to distrust the other, but both have also seen the dangers of extremism within their own species.
Noa could become the ape leader most willing to negotiate with humans. Mae could become the human leader most capable of understanding ape society. Their partnership could create a new era of cooperation, or their mutual fear could turn the satellite network into the opening move of another war.
Is Raka alive?
Raka is swept out to sea while protecting Mae, and the film does not show a conventional body. That leaves a narrow possibility that he survived, but the movie does not confirm it.
For now, Raka’s importance does not depend on a return. His teachings shape Mae’s understanding of ape compassion, and his symbol becomes part of the emotional exchange between Mae and Noa. Any claim that Raka is definitely alive—or definitely scheduled to return—goes beyond what the ending establishes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Proximus Caesar definitely dead?
The film shows Proximus falling after the eagles attack him. Although there is no body, the scene is framed as his final defeat. A future story could theoretically reinterpret the fall, but there is no confirmed evidence here that he survived.
Keeping the possibility technically open is different from saying that a return is planned. The ending gives Noa a completed victory over Proximus while leaving the larger political consequences of his rule unresolved.
Does Kingdom lead directly into the 1968 Planet of the Apes?
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes takes place approximately 300 years after the Caesar trilogy. It deliberately moves the franchise farther into the future and echoes imagery associated with the original 1968 film, including apes on horseback and a world in which humans have lost social power.

That does not establish a strict scene-by-scene route to the 1968 movie. The safest reading is that Kingdom is building toward a broader future history: ape civilization becomes more organized while human intelligence and technology begin to re-emerge.

The world may eventually develop into something resembling the setting of the 1968 film, but the ending does not state that every event must align exactly with that continuity. It shows a possible direction, not a completed bridge.
What the ending is ultimately saying
Kingdom ends by replacing a simple succession story with a three-way struggle over the future. Noa must unite apes without becoming another Proximus. Mae must reconnect humans without turning survival into a new campaign of domination. And both societies must decide whether the past is a warning, a weapon or a foundation for cooperation.

The film is set about 300 years after the Caesar trilogy and moves toward the general conditions associated with the 1968 movie, but it does not confirm a strict scene-by-scene continuity path into that film.
The Bottom Line
The ending reveals that Mae used the bunker’s encryption or communications device to reactivate a satellite network and reconnect intelligent human survivors. Noa defeats Proximus, but the final exchange between Noa and Mae shows that human–ape cooperation remains uncertain. The future conflict will be shaped by human reconnection, ape political unity and competing interpretations of Caesar’s legacy.
