It also described backlash and questions around forum bans and a code of conduct, placing the discussion in a wider argument about how the game and its community were being moderated. ComicBook.com’s January 18 report is coverage of those claims, not confirmation of their scale or of the Saudi rationale.

The phrase “fans turn on devs” overstates what the available reporting can show. It documents criticism and online disputes, but supplies no audience measurement establishing how representative those voices were.
What did Daniel Vávra say?
Warhorse co-founder and creative director Daniel Vávra defended the game’s creative autonomy and its depiction of medieval Bohemia. In the statement reproduced by ComicBook.com, he said: “The game is exactly what I wanted it to be. No one has tried to influence me as an artist in any way, and anyone who knows me knows I wouldn’t let them anyway.” He added: “Our goal was, and still is, to show life in medieval Bohemia as it easily could have happened and to tell an interesting story.”

Vávra also framed the game as a role-playing experience in which players make choices and face consequences. Those remarks explain his stated creative intent and view of player agency; they do not directly identify or describe the disputed scenes, nor do they independently establish the historical accuracy of the game’s portrayal.
How did Warhorse explain the game’s broader cast?
In a 2025 interview with PC Gamer, Warhorse representatives pushed back against attempts to label the studio through culture-war debates. Global PR manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling said: “It seems like someone is always trying to brand us somehow, and we are just trying to make a cool videogame.” Senior game designer Ondřej Bittner said: “We think the extreme voices are just never happy.”

The PC Gamer article reported that Stolz-Zwilling connected the sequel’s wider cast to its setting and historical research, including the move into Kuttenberg. These are the studio’s explanations for its creative choices; they do not establish how players as a whole received them. PC Gamer’s interview feature provides the context for those remarks.
Did the controversy affect sales or reception?
That has not been established by the cited coverage. On January 9, 2026, executive producer Martin Klíma said it was difficult to know whether the disputes affected sales or reception. He gave his personal view that the controversy probably mattered little to the wider gaming public, describing it as something that “only mattered to, really, a handful of terminally online culture warriors.” He also said any effect on developer morale was small.

Later in 2026, GameSpot reported that the game received two Gayming Awards nominations and quoted Vávra describing the Henry–Hans relationship as optional and as his own idea. The coverage did not identify which other games Vávra believed had mishandled LGBTQ+ audiences. The nominations are a separate development from the January 2025 dispute and do not, by themselves, show how broadly players approved or objected to the game.
