What Kim Petras said about identity and recognition
“My purpose is to be an artist. I just so happen to be transgender, but that’s not all that I am,” Petras told People in an exclusive interview published June 23, 2023, and syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment. She was not saying that being transgender is unimportant. Rather, she described wanting her identity and her work to be understood in full.

She put that idea another way: “It is important that I show people that you are more than your gender. I have so many sides to me. That’s not all that makes me me.” Her answer to what equality means was similarly tied to artistic recognition: being known as a great artist.
The career context for the interview
The interview coincided with the June 23, 2023 release of Feed the Beast, which the article called Petras’s major-label debut. It recounts her pursuit of pop stardom from childhood, earlier independent work, and signing with Republic Records in 2021. Petras also recalled being told she would not succeed as a mainstream artist because she is trans.
