The most expensive outfit associated with Kim Kardashian is the Jean-Louis dress Marilyn Monroe wore in 1962: Ripley’s bought it at auction for $4.8 million in 2016. Despite the popular “10 most expensive outfits” framing, available sources do not establish comparable prices for ten Kardashian looks. The clearest way to explore the subject is to separate the documented record from other notable outfits whose prices are not disclosed.

What the $4.8 million figure means
Ripley’s, which owns the dress, says it purchased the garment at Julien’s Auctions in 2016 for $4,800,000. Guinness World Records also records that sale price in its 2024 account. The dress’s history
Monroe wore the dress on May 19, 1962, at a fundraising gala at Madison Square Garden, where she sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy. Guinness says the design was based on a Bob Mackie sketch and realized by costume designer Jean-Louis. How Kardashian wore it
Kardashian wore the original on the 2022 Met Gala red carpet for several minutes before changing into a replica. TIME and Guinness report the change. In Vogue, Kardashian explained her choice: “For me the most Marilyn Monroe moment is when she sang ‘Happy Birthday,’ to JFK, it was that look.” TIME; Vogue.
Why a ten-outfit price ranking is not supported
A ranking needs prices that refer to the same kind of value. An auction sale price, an estimated garment value, jewelry included in a complete look, and a celebrity’s own spending are different measures. A borrowed or loaned piece also should not be described as Kardashian’s purchase. The cited sources establish the Monroe dress’s auction result, but they do not provide item-specific, comparable prices for ten Kardashian outfits.

Vogue also identifies Kardashian’s 2019 Thierry Mugler “wet look” and her 2021 Balenciaga outfit as notable Met Gala looks, but its cited account does not state comparable prices for them. Vogue also points to Kardashian’s Balenciaga look at the 2021 Met Gala. Without a sourced, item-specific figure and a clear definition of what it covers, assigning it a price or rank would be speculative.

Kardashian’s brief appearance in Monroe’s original dress drew criticism from costume conservators and curators concerned about professional treatment of historic clothing. Sarah Scaturro, chief conservator at the Cleveland Museum of Art, told the Museums Association: “I’m frustrated because it sets back what is considered professional treatment for historic costume.” That is an attributed concern; the cited sources do not establish that the dress was damaged.
