Kid Rock used an ableist slur during a Halloween-costume discussion on Fox News’s Jesse Watters Primetime on October 24, 2025. Special Olympics Chief Inspiration Officer Loretta Claiborne later addressed the remark in an open letter, asking him to acknowledge the hurt it caused.
What happened on Fox News
On the October 24, 2025 episode of Jesse Watters Primetime, musician Kid Rock—whose legal name is Robert James Ritchie—was discussing Halloween costumes. The Independent reported that he held a face mask over his mouth and used the slur commonly called the R-word to describe his planned costume; host Jesse Watters laughed. The Independent’s report and BuzzFeed’s October 28 account describe the incident.
The available accounts establish the program, date and reported exchange, but do not provide a complete transcript of the segment. They also do not establish the full surrounding dialogue. Watters’s reported laughter should not be taken as evidence of an official Fox News position.
How Special Olympics responded
Loretta Claiborne, Special Olympics Chief Inspiration Officer, published an open letter addressed to Kid Rock. She asked him to recognize the harm caused by the slur and reject both the term and the prejudice it represents. In the letter, Claiborne wrote: “The R-Word deeply demeans and harms people with intellectual disabilities.” Read Claiborne’s open letter on the Special Olympics website.

The letter presents Special Olympics’ advocacy position: it says the term has a history of belittling and dehumanizing people with intellectual disabilities, and that public use reinforces stigma. It also refers to the Spread the Word campaign, run with Best Buddies, as having joined “hundreds of thousands of advocates around the world.” The letter does not date that figure.
What was Kid Rock’s Halloween costume?
The reports say he held a face mask over his mouth while describing a planned costume, using the slur in that description. The available material does not establish a fuller costume description, so it does not support a more specific account of what he intended to wear.
