Rolling Stone reported that a Los Angeles City Fire Department incident report classified the January 9, 2012 fire involving Kid Cudi’s Porsche as intentional, described an incendiary device and estimated $10,000 in damage. The report reportedly named no suspects. Separate testimony in 2025 described additional scene evidence; neither the report account nor the testimony establishes who set the fire.
What Rolling Stone reported from the 2012 fire report
In a September 2024 article, Rolling Stone said it had obtained an LAFD incident report concerning a Porsche owned by Scott Mescudi, the musician known as Kid Cudi. The report recorded a fire on January 9, 2012. According to Rolling Stone’s account, it described an “incendiary device,” classified the cause as intentional and estimated damage at $10,000. Rolling Stone also reported that the document did not name any suspects. Rolling Stone’s account of the report
The original incident report is not available in the cited coverage for independent review, so these details should be understood as Rolling Stone’s description of the document, not a direct quotation or examination of the report here.
What the investigator later told the court
The 2012 report account and the evidence described at trial are distinct. In May 2025, LAFD arson investigator Lance Jimenez testified about his examination of the scene. ABC News reported that Jimenez described a cut in the car’s fabric roof and a bottle containing liquid that he said smelled like gasoline. He also characterized the fire as targeted, saying, “In my opinion it was targeted.” That was his testimony and assessment, not wording attributed to the 2012 report. ABC News on Jimenez’s testimony

What was alleged about Combs—and what was denied
Rolling Stone reported that Cassie Ventura’s lawsuit alleged Combs learned she had briefly been involved with Mescudi and threatened to blow up Mescudi’s car. The allegation is not proof that Combs arranged or carried out the fire. In 2025, Cudi testified that he believed Combs was behind it, according to the Associated Press; that is Cudi’s stated belief, not an independent finding of responsibility. Associated Press report on Cudi’s testimony
Combs’ lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, denied involvement or direction in a statement to Rolling Stone: “There is no allegation that Mr. Combs was involved in these actions or directed anyone else to take them.” The available accounts therefore present a reported fire investigation, a witness’s belief, an allegation and a defense denial—not an established conclusion about who caused the fire.
