KickAssAnime was hit by a Cloudflare “suspected phishing” warning on February 5, 2025, disrupting access to the major anime piracy portal. The site’s operator disputed the implication that KickAssAnime was intentionally phishing users and suggested that mass abuse reports may have triggered the intervention. That explanation was not independently confirmed, and the available evidence does not establish that the warning was either a false report or proof of deliberate credential theft.
The incident is best understood as a warning about both uncertainty and risk. Cloudflare’s interstitial was a real technical mitigation, but it was not a public forensic verdict on every KickAssAnime page, domain, operator, or later replacement mirror.
What users saw
According to a February 5, 2025 report by TorrentFreak, visitors to KickAssAnime domains were shown a Cloudflare page saying the website had been reported for potential phishing. Instead of loading normally, the warning interrupted access and directed attention to the possibility that the destination could be harmful.

At the time, KickAssAnime’s domains remained flagged. The operator redirected visitors to KAA.mx as a workaround. That was a contemporaneous response, not independent confirmation that KAA.mx—or any subsequent domain using the KickAssAnime name—was safe or permanently official.
What the Cloudflare warning means—and what it does not
Cloudflare’s published anti-phishing process allows abuse reports to be submitted and can place a warning page in front of a reported URL. Cloudflare also documents processes through which site owners may receive information about abuse reports and request a review of a mitigation.
That establishes that Cloudflare took a technical step to interrupt access. It does not establish all of the following:

- who submitted the report;
- whether a coordinated mass-reporting campaign took place;
- whether KickAssAnime’s operators intentionally tried to steal passwords or other credentials;
- whether every page or domain associated with the brand presented the same risk;
- whether a later mirror was legitimate; or
- whether the warning represented a complete technical investigation of the service.
A Cloudflare interstitial should therefore be treated as a reason to stop and reassess—not as conclusive proof of criminal intent, and not as a warning that readers can safely dismiss without further thought.

What KickAssAnime’s operator claimed
The operator, identified by TorrentFreak as Dion, disputed the suggestion that KickAssAnime was involved in phishing. The operator said the site had been ad-free for weeks, collected only an email address for sign-up, and was not known to be involved in phishing.
The operator also suspected that an adversary had submitted mass abuse reports to trigger Cloudflare’s action. However, the report did not establish that theory, and the operator had not received confirmation from Cloudflare about the underlying report. The careful description is therefore that KickAssAnime alleged mass reporting—not that mass reporting was proven to be the cause.
Why the warning still deserves caution
Even if the operator’s explanation were eventually substantiated, users would still have practical reasons to be careful. Anime piracy sites commonly depend on changing domains, third-party video hosts, advertising networks, pop-ups, redirects, and unofficial mirrors. Those surrounding systems can expose visitors to risks that are separate from whether the site’s operators intentionally designed the service to steal passwords.
The contemporary reporting also noted mixed external signals: some VirusTotal results raised concerns, while Google Safe Browsing did not show an alarm at the time. Such services can provide useful indicators, but neither result is a forensic determination of who operated KickAssAnime, what happened on every page, or whether a particular domain was safe at a later date.
Warning signs users should not ignore
If a page connected with KickAssAnime—or any changing mirror—does any of the following, close it rather than trying to work around the warning:

- asks for a primary email password, payment-card details, recovery codes, or two-factor authentication codes;
- claims that an account must be verified immediately;
- prompts you to install a browser extension to play a video;
- offers a “video player,” codec, browser update, or security update as a download;
- downloads an executable file without a clear reason;
- opens repeated tabs or redirects you through unrelated domains; or
- uses urgency, prize claims, fake virus alerts, or account-lock threats to pressure you into clicking.
Never reuse an important password on an unofficial streaming site. If you entered a password into a suspicious page, change it from the service’s genuine website, change it anywhere else you reused it, and review active sessions and multifactor-authentication settings. If you supplied payment information, contact the card issuer through its official number or website.
What to do if you downloaded something
- Do not open the download. If it is still in the Downloads folder, delete it and empty the recycle bin.
- Disconnect if the computer is behaving suspiciously. Unexpected pop-ups, new extensions, changed search settings, or repeated redirects justify disconnecting from the network while you investigate.
- Remove unfamiliar browser extensions. Check the extensions or add-ons page in each browser you used, and remove anything you did not intentionally install.
- Run your operating system’s security scans. Keep your antivirus and Windows security tools updated. A single scan result should not be treated as a guarantee that a machine is clean.
- Check accounts from a separate trusted device if possible. Review sign-in alerts, sessions, forwarding rules, and recovery details for important email, social, gaming, and financial accounts.
- Seek specialist help for persistent symptoms. If security tools are disabled, files are encrypted, or sensitive accounts show unauthorized activity, preserve relevant evidence and contact a reputable security professional.
Should you use a VPN to get around the warning?
A VPN changes the network path and can provide privacy benefits in some situations, but it does not verify the identity of a website, remove phishing content, or make a suspicious mirror trustworthy. Using a VPN to bypass a security interstitial can make it easier to ignore the very signal that should prompt caution.
The same principle applies to other workarounds. A different browser, private-browsing window, DNS service, or streaming device does not protect you from a fake login page, malicious download, deceptive extension prompt, or unsafe advertising redirect.
Why KickAssAnime’s domains keep creating confusion
Domain volatility makes incidents like this difficult to verify. A later publicly indexed Telegram channel using the KickAssAnime name listed multiple domain changes and warned users away from at least one alleged scam domain. That material is useful evidence that the brand’s domain situation remained unstable, but it is operator-controlled and cannot independently certify any listed address.
Readers should be particularly skeptical of search results, social-media posts, comment sections, and messages claiming to reveal the “new official” domain. Attackers can register convincing lookalikes quickly, and legitimate operators can also change domains without providing independent verification. Copyright enforcement is a separate issue
The February 2025 report placed the warning in the wider context of continuing rightsholder efforts to identify operators of anime and manga piracy sites. That context may help explain why piracy domains and infrastructure face pressure, but the available evidence does not prove that copyright enforcement caused Cloudflare’s phishing warning.
These are separate questions:
- Platform safety: Why did Cloudflare place a suspected-phishing warning in front of the domain?
- Copyright and legality: Did the service distribute or link to content without the necessary rights?
- Operator intent: Was there an intentional attempt to steal credentials or personal information?
A report about one of those questions should not be presented as proof of the others.

Viewers who want to avoid rapidly changing mirrors should use licensed anime-streaming services available in their country. Availability, catalogs, subtitles, dubs, pricing, and subscription terms vary by geography and can change, so no service should be assumed to carry every title previously found on KickAssAnime. Official services such as Crunchyroll and HIDIVE publish their own subscription and availability information; check those sources directly before subscribing.
The bottom line
Cloudflare’s February 2025 “suspected phishing” warning was real, but its public appearance did not by itself prove that KickAssAnime’s operators were stealing passwords, nor did the operator’s mass-reporting theory prove that the warning was false. The cause and any independent resolution were not established in the available reporting.
