Rajanarayanan—widely known as Ki. Ra.—was a Tamil writer and folklorist whose fiction brought the people, speech and oral traditions of the Karisal region into sharper focus in Tamil literature. His novel Gopallapurathu Makkal won the 1991 Sahitya Akademi Award in Tamil.
Who was Ki. Rajanarayanan?
Ki. Ra. was born in 1923 in Idaiseval, near Kovilpatti in southern Tamil Nadu, and died in Puducherry on 17 May 2021. Sources differ on his birth day, so the year is the reliable detail to use. Scroll.in and The New Indian Express give conflicting dates in September 1923.
He left formal schooling after the seventh standard, according to his publisher and an obituary. That biographical detail should not be treated as a simple explanation for his literary voice: his work grew from sustained attention to the region and its language, people and storytelling traditions.
What is Karisal literature?
Karisal refers to the black-soil landscape of southern Tamil Nadu. In Ki. Ra.’s writing it is not merely scenery: local people, spoken language, customs and oral traditions shape the stories themselves. His work is associated with Karisal literature, a body of writing rooted in this region and its cultural life.

The scale of that contribution was revisited during centenary sessions recorded in the Sahitya Akademi’s 2023–24 annual report. The sessions addressed his language, folklore, humor and literary style, among other subjects. Their topics show the breadth of scholarly interest, rather than a single definitive critical judgment. What did Ki. Ra. write?
His first short story appeared in 1958. Penguin Random House India describes a body of work that includes numerous short stories, three novels, essays and a dialect dictionary of the Karisal region. The publisher’s author page lists People of Gopallapuram, its English title for Gopallapurathu Makkal. Penguin Random House India: Ki Rajanarayanan
Gopallapurathu Makkal
The novel is the work most closely associated with his major literary award: it received the 1991 Sahitya Akademi Award in Tamil. Its English title, People of Gopallapuram, appears on the publisher’s author page. Sahitya Akademi award list
Short fiction and film
Ki. Ra.’s short story “Kidai” was adapted into the Tamil film Orutthi, according to The Indian Express. The adaptation is one example of his fiction reaching beyond the page; it does not establish where the film is currently available to watch.

Folklore and dialect were central to his work as both a writer and collector. His Karisal-region dialect dictionary and collection of oral traditions reflect an interest in how people speak and tell stories, not only in written literary forms. The publisher identifies the dictionary among his works, while Sahitya Akademi’s centenary report documents attention to folklore and dialect in discussions of his writing.

The phrase fits because his literary project joined regional life to literary form: Karisal people and their customs were subjects of fiction, their speech was part of its texture, and oral storytelling was a field he collected and studied. A seminar paper title recorded by Sahitya Akademi called him “The Pioneer of Karisal Literature”; that phrase belongs to the presenter’s paper title, not to Ki. Ra. himself.
In 1989 he moved to Puducherry and was appointed honorary professor of folklore in the Tamil Department of Pondicherry University, according to Penguin Random House India. The position connected his creative and collecting work with the academic study of folklore.
