But its family power struggle increasingly takes up room that could have gone to the artists. Music and several performances keep the series lively; familiar melodrama and implausible industry machinations limit the force of its critique.
What is Khalbali Records about?
The eight-episode Hindi series follows Raghav Rai, a producer at his father Manavendra’s Galaxy Records. After rapper Mauj dies, Raghav breaks away to start Khalbali Records, an alternative label built around artists rather than the priorities of a powerful family business. That premise brings together two kinds of conflict: the Rai family’s struggle for control and a broader argument about commercial power, creative freedom and musicians’ treatment.
Directed by Devanshu Singh, the series features music direction by Amit Trivedi and production credits for Azadi Records and Colosceum Media. It was released on September 12, 2024. Gadgets 360’s series listing gives the cast and credits.
Does the music overcome the family drama?
At its best, the show is most convincing when it stays close to musicians: their performances, relationships and attempts to make work on their own terms. Rap sequences give the series an energy that the boardroom and household confrontations cannot always sustain. The presence of real rap artists, including Prabh Deep as Mauj, helps connect the musical world to the story’s claims about creative independence.

That balance slips as the Rai family conflict gathers force. Nandini Ramnath’s Scroll review identifies the problem directly: “The family melodrama gets too much play in a show with a declared focus on artists.” The family plot does provide a dramatic vehicle for questions of ownership and authority, but it can also displace the people whose work is supposed to be at stake. The later movement toward familiar melodrama makes the artist-first premise feel less central than it initially promises.
How well does its music-business critique work?
Khalbali Records raises relevant tensions around exploitation, abuse complaints, commercial control and the difficulty of protecting creative freedom inside a powerful industry. Its weakness is not a lack of ambition, but the uneven credibility of the world built around those issues. Shubhra Gupta’s Indian Express review praises the music and brisk pace while questioning the plausibility of the series’ media and police power dynamics.
That strain matters because the story needs its institutions to feel persuasive if its critique is to carry weight. When power plays become exaggerated, the conflict can read more like a melodramatic shortcut than a grounded account of how artists confront commercial authority. The show makes the clash visible, but does not always give it the depth or realism to make every turn land.
What works in the cast?
Ram Kapoor gives Manavendra the presence of a patriarch accustomed to command, making the family and label’s concentration of power legible. Skand Thakur’s Raghav anchors the break from that world, though the character’s personal and artistic stakes have to compete with the expanding family plot. Saloni Batra as Ananya adds another perspective to the ensemble, while Prabh Deep’s Mauj brings a performer’s credibility to the music-centered material.

The performances contribute energy, especially when the series lets its musicians and artists occupy the foreground. But character development is less consistently persuasive than the musical sequences. India Today’s review similarly notes the appeal of the music-video sequences alongside weaknesses in character development.
Is Khalbali Records worth watching?
For viewers drawn to rap performances and stories about artistic independence, the series offers enough musical energy and ensemble presence to make its premise appealing. Those looking for a tightly grounded account of the music business may find that the family melodrama crowds out the more distinctive questions the show raises. The Indian Express rated it three out of five stars; that fits a series with real momentum and musical appeal, but an uneven balance between its subject and its plot.
