Sami Zayn is Kevin Owens’ strongest tag team partner: their connection began before WWE, their contrasting strengths translated into natural in-ring chemistry, and they won the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 39. Chris Jericho is the clearest other standout, particularly for the story value of their unlikely alliance. The “worst” side is less definitive: WWE’s available records document some short-lived and temporary pairings, not a complete list of Owens’ partners or a fair career-wide statistical comparison. The five selections below are therefore an editorial ranking, not a definitive ledger.
How this ranking defines “best” and “worst”
The ranking weighs on-screen chemistry, story impact, documented accomplishments, longevity, and whether a pairing felt coherent. Those measures matter because the available official WWE material does not establish a complete partner inventory or comparative win-loss records. The strongest entries are sustained or narratively significant partnerships; the “worst” selections are limited pairings that are less convincing by the same criteria, not proof that a wrestler was objectively bad as Owens’ partner.
There is also an important distinction between a regular duo and wrestlers placed together for one match. A single six-man match can show how a combination worked on that night, but it cannot establish a lasting tag team.
Five of Kevin Owens’ best tag team partners
1. Sami Zayn
Zayn is the most convincing No. 1 because the partnership has a long history, direct testimony from both wrestlers, and a major WWE accomplishment. Their association predates WWE: they recall meeting in 2002, and WWE describes them as friends, partners, and rivals across many years.

Zayn explained why the team worked: “As a teammate, it was so natural. There was a unique dichotomy between us, being so different but gelling so well together in the ring.” Owens likewise said, “I’ve always enjoyed fighting him or teaming with him. I think we bring the best out in each other in both cases.” Both comments come from WWE’s interview about their relationship, and Owens’ remark explicitly encompasses their work as opponents as well as teammates.
Their best-documented tag-team achievement is winning the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship from The Usos at WrestleMania 39, as recorded in WWE’s Kevin Owens profile. The combination of history, complementary styles, and that high-profile victory makes Zayn the clear leading choice.
2. Chris Jericho
Jericho belongs near the top for a different reason: his partnership with Owens had a distinctive story identity. WWE describes it as an unlikely alliance and connects it to “The List of Jericho,” making the duo memorable beyond the mechanics of a tag match. Their partnership ultimately broke down into conflict, so its strength is entertainment and story impact more than evidence of a long-running team.

That split is not a reason to dismiss the pairing. It gives the alliance a clear dramatic arc, but it also means Jericho does not outrank Zayn on the basis of enduring partnership or the same documented connection across years. WWE’s Chris Jericho profile and its SmackDown report provide the official context for the alliance and its story.

When Owens, Zayn, and Jericho were grouped in multi-person matches, the combination brought together two of Owens’ most compelling individual relationships. That can make for strong television, but it is not evidence of a separate, stable Owens-and-Jericho-and-Zayn tag team. This entry recognizes the appeal of those combinations while keeping the more meaningful evaluations attached to Owens’ one-to-one partnerships with Zayn and Jericho.
4. Owens’ temporary partners in multi-person matches
Owens has also appeared alongside wrestlers who were match partners rather than established teammates. These combinations can be useful for a particular story or contest, but without a recurring alliance or documented run, they rank below the more developed pairings. The official material cited here does not support naming a complete set of such partners or claiming a longer record for any one of them.

5. Short-lived pairings with a clear on-screen purpose
Some Owens pairings are best understood as temporary alliances serving a match or storyline. They can produce an effective moment, but a brief combination offers less evidence of tag chemistry and sustained success than the Zayn partnership or the Jericho story. This final selection is deliberately a category rather than a named wrestler: the official examples available do not establish enough detail to responsibly identify a fifth standout as a regular partner.

These five selections do not claim that WWE documented five objectively poor partners. The available official reporting supports fewer named examples than the title’s “five worst” framing suggests, so the entries below distinguish a documented match combination from broader categories of limited evidence rather than inventing a ranked list of wrestlers.

A WWE match report documents Owens and Zayn on one side of a six-man match involving Mahal. WWE praised the chemistry between Owens and Zayn in the contest and described how Mahal’s actions helped turn the match against their side. That makes the match a reasonable example of a combination that did not work out on the night, but not evidence of a sustained Owens–Mahal duo or proof that Mahal was Owens’ worst partner. See WWE’s match report for the specific context.

2. One-night partners without a continuing alliance
A wrestler paired with Owens for one match has limited time to develop recognizable tag chemistry. Unless a recurring team or a meaningful result is established, that kind of pairing is less persuasive than a sustained partnership. The official sources cited here do not identify a full list of one-night partners, so no unsupported names or rankings are attached.
3. Temporary allies whose stories point toward conflict
An alliance can be compelling precisely because it is unstable. Jericho’s partnership with Owens demonstrates that story value and team longevity are not the same thing. For a “worst” ranking based on lasting tag-team cohesion, a partnership designed to fracture is less durable; for entertainment value, it can be among Owens’ best.
4. Multi-person combinations mistaken for duos
Six-man and other multi-person matches do not establish that every teammate formed a regular team with Owens. Mahal’s documented match is a case in point: the report describes a specific contest, not a continuing tag partnership. Treating every match ally as a career tag partner would make the ranking broader than the evidence allows.
5. Pairings without enough documented evidence to judge
Some combinations may be difficult to assess because the official records cited for this ranking do not provide a sustained run, clear team identity, or comparative results. “Not enough evidence to rank” is more accurate than assigning a named wrestler a bottom-five position without support.
What the record supports—and what it does not
The official material firmly supports Zayn as Owens’ most complete partner and Jericho as a major story-driven pairing. It also supplies a specific six-man match involving Mahal, but not an ongoing team. It does not establish a full career list, partner-by-partner win-loss totals, or a statistical basis for naming five objectively worst partners. Any such ranking should be read as a selection based on documented examples and editorial criteria, not as a complete career database.
