Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga received a standing ovation after its world premiere at the 77th Festival de Cannes on May 19, 2024. Accounts differ on its length: Variety reported seven minutes, while The Washington Post described Costner speaking about nine minutes after the applause began.
How long was the standing ovation?
There is no single agreed duration in the published accounts. Variety reported a seven-minute ovation. The Washington Post wrote that Costner took a microphone about nine minutes after the applause began with the first credit. The reports may be timing different portions of the response; neither establishes a shared measurement method.
Costner told The Washington Post, “I’m sorry that you had to clap that long for me to understand that I should speak.” He added, “I’ll never forget this, neither will my children.” Variety quoted him saying, “Such good people. Such a good moment, not just for me, but for the actors that came with me, for people who believed in me who continued to work.”
What happened at Cannes?

In its April 8, 2024 announcement, Costner said, “I’d like to thank the Festival de Cannes for including my film Horizon, An American Saga in this year’s selection,”

Who made the film, and what was the release plan?
Costner directed, starred in, produced, and co-wrote the film. The Cannes credits also name Jon Baird as a screenwriter and list Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, and others in the cast.
