The notice of entry of judgment was filed four days later, on February 20. The couple had announced a settlement in September 2023, avoiding a trial that had been scheduled for December.
When did the divorce become final?
The effective date was February 16, 2024. The February 20 filing was the notice of entry of judgment—not the date the marriage ended. The Associated Press reported the judgment date based on Santa Barbara County court records; ET separately reported the notice filing.
How the divorce reached a settlement
- April 11, 2023: The separation date listed in Baumgartner’s filing, according to ET’s report on documents obtained by the outlet.
- May 2023: Baumgartner filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, ET reported.
- September 2023: The couple announced they had reached a settlement, avoiding a December trial scheduled in Santa Barbara County. Their publicist, Arnold Robinson, released a statement saying: “Kevin and Christine Costner have come to an amicable and mutually agreed upon resolution of all issues pertaining to their divorce proceedings.”
- February 16, 2024: The judgment took effect and the marriage ended, according to court records cited by AP.
- February 20, 2024: The notice of entry of judgment was filed, ET reported.
What has been reported about custody and support?
AP reported that Costner and Baumgartner would share joint custody of their three children. In a separate part of the proceedings, a judge ordered Costner to pay about $63,000 per month in September 2023, after Baumgartner had sought about $175,000 per month. Those figures describe the reported support dispute and September order; they are not a complete accounting of the later settlement.
ET reported that the marital settlement agreement, signed the week before the February 20 notice, resolved custody issues and excused the couple from a parent education or co-parenting class. The court could still require classes if custody issues arose later.

What is not known about the final financial terms?
The available reporting does not establish the final agreement’s complete financial or property terms. It does not confirm a lump-sum payment, a final spousal-support arrangement, or how property was divided. The earlier monthly support figures should not be treated as a summary of the full settlement.
