All three seasons of the completed psychological thriller are streaming on Netflix in the U.S.
The Following is not a new Netflix original or a movie: it is Kevin Williamson’s completed 2013 network psychological thriller, and all three seasons are streaming on Netflix in the U.S. The series makes for an unusually straightforward catch-up watch because its entire story is there: 45 episodes across three 15-episode seasons.
Kevin Bacon versus James Purefoy
Kevin Bacon plays Ryan Hardy, a former FBI agent who had already put serial killer Joe Carroll away. When Carroll escapes death row, Hardy is pulled back into the case—and discovers that Carroll, played with unnerving composure by James Purefoy, has built a devoted network ready to act for him. That is the show’s engine: less a case-of-the-week procedural than a tense, serialized pursuit between a damaged investigator and an adversary who can reach far beyond a prison cell.
Netflix’s official description calls it a psychological thriller, while its longer guide identifies Carroll’s obsession with Edgar Allan Poe. That literary-gothic note gives the violence and cult dynamics a deliberately pulpy edge; the show is interested in the danger of charisma as much as in clues and arrests. Netflix’s title page lists Bacon, Purefoy and Shawn Ashmore among the cast and credits Williamson as creator.

What kind of binge is it?
This is a dark, high-concept serial-killer thriller with abductions, murder and sustained peril—not a relaxed procedural. Netflix rates it TV-14, meaning parents are strongly cautioned. Viewers who enjoy a cat-and-mouse story with cult psychology, shifting loyalties and a heightened horror sensibility are the natural audience; viewers looking for a true-crime documentary, a cozy mystery or an all-ages crime show should look elsewhere.
The show also benefits from Kevin Williamson’s genre instincts. His premise takes the familiar investigator-versus-killer setup and turns it outward: Carroll’s “following” means Hardy can never be certain that the next person in the room is merely a bystander. That provides a strong early hook without requiring a spoiler-heavy explanation of where later seasons go.

A complete series, not a revival
There is no fourth season waiting in the wings. Fox cancelled The Following after season three, and its two-hour series finale aired on May 18, 2015. That finality matters for anyone wary of starting an abandoned serial drama: the run has an endpoint. Contemporary cancellation coverage confirmed the three-season finish.
Netflix added the existing series on January 3, 2026; it has not commissioned a continuation. Netflix’s own January guide and subsequent feature describe all three seasons as available, placing this firmly in the catalog-rediscovery category rather than the new-release or revival category. Netflix’s guide to the series is a useful spoiler-light primer before pressing play.

Try the first episode if the premise appeals, then decide whether its heightened network-TV thriller mode works for you. It is a better fit for viewers seeking momentum and melodramatic menace than for those wanting procedural realism. As one limited reception marker, Rotten Tomatoes currently lists season one at 63% from 51 critic reviews. That is a season-one aggregator snapshot—not a verdict on every season, or a substitute for knowing your own tolerance for violent thriller material.
Where to watch The Following
All three seasons are streaming on Netflix in the U.S. according to Netflix and a U.S. availability check refreshed July 29, 2026. Streaming rights are territorial and change regularly, so viewers outside the U.S.—and U.S. viewers reading later—should check the Netflix title page in their own region before subscribing or planning a binge.
