On July 23, 1996, Kerri Strug landed a second vault on an injured ankle during the Atlanta Olympic women’s team final. The moment became the defining image of the Magnificent Seven’s first U.S. Olympic women’s team gymnastics gold. But the team’s belief that Strug had to land that vault was mistaken: later reporting says her score was not needed for the victory.
What happened on Kerri Strug’s first vault at the 1996 Olympics?
The final rotation of the women’s team competition was vault, and Strug was the last U.S. gymnast to compete. She fell on her first attempt and jammed her left ankle. In her official FAQ, Strug put it simply: “I landed short of my first vault and jammed my left ankle.”
She then chose to try again. Her second vault landed; she pulled up her left leg and collapsed to her knees. The Associated Press later reported that she had to be carried and that subsequent tests showed two torn ligaments in her ankle. That injury detail is AP reporting, not a diagnosis from Strug’s FAQ.
Who made Kerri Strug do the second vault?
Strug’s own account is that nobody made her vault again. Asked who made her do it, she answered: “No one made me do the second vault. My coach, Bela Karolyi, encouraged me to do it by yelling positive affirmations to me such as, ‘Kerri, you can do it!’ I was the one that decided that I would and could do the vault again.”

That account records her stated choice and Karolyi’s encouragement; it does not erase the later criticism of the coaching decision. The AP reported that critics questioned whether Karolyi should have encouraged an injured gymnast to compete and objected to his carrying her into the medal arena. Those are retrospective criticisms of the episode, not a basis for asserting what Strug was medically capable of doing at the time.
Did Strug need the second vault for the U.S. to win gold?
No. The team thought Strug needed to land her second vault to ensure the gold, and Strug later recalled the pressure of believing the medal was slipping away. CBS quoted her in its 2016 interview: “I fell on my first vault and injured my ankle…I remember thinking this is crazy our Gold medal is slipping away and I have to nail this.” But the AP’s later scoring account says the second score was not necessary for the U.S. victory.

The distinction matters: the vault was a dramatic act performed under the team’s belief in the moment, but it did not clinch a result the United States otherwise would have lost. Cox Media reported Strug’s second-vault score as 9.712; an official results sheet was not verified in the sources available for this account, so that figure should be treated as Cox Media’s reported score rather than independently confirmed here.
Why did the vault become an Olympic icon?
The landing compressed the stakes of a team final into a few seconds: a fall, an injury, a second attempt, and an athlete collapsing after completing it. The U.S. women won their first Olympic team gymnastics gold, and Strug’s image came to stand for the team’s achievement. The Washington Post’s 2016 anniversary coverage called the victory the first U.S. women’s team gold at an Olympic Games.

The team, known as the Magnificent Seven, consisted of Kerri Strug, Dominique Moceanu, Shannon Miller, Dominique Dawes, Amy Chow, Amanda Borden, and Jaycie Phelps. USA Gymnastics’ archived biography also notes that Strug’s performance earned her a place on a Wheaties box, one indication of how widely the vault circulated beyond the competition.

The anniversary fell in 2016, twenty years after the July 23, 1996 final. CBS interviewed Strug on May 3, 2016; she reflected that “a lot has changed in 20 years since we won the team Gold.” USA Gymnastics reported a Magnificent Seven reunion at a special anniversary event in San Jose. The account of that reunion is limited to the federation’s indexed summary.

The anniversary is historical, not current: 2016 marked twenty years, and the event’s thirtieth anniversary has now passed. Strug’s vault remains memorable, but its full story includes both her account of choosing to compete and the later correction that the team did not need her second score to win.
