Artists and productions withdrew from Kennedy Center engagements in two main waves: after Donald Trump became chair of the institution’s board in February 2025, and after the board voted in December 2025 to add his name to the building. Some artists said they objected to the center’s politicization or partisanship; other events were canceled or postponed for financial or scheduling reasons. The examples below reflect reports published through January 20, 2026, not a definitive list of every change through October 2026.
What changed at the Kennedy Center?
Trump became chair of the Kennedy Center board in February 2025, after which the institution underwent board and leadership changes. A first group of artists and productions withdrew. A second wave followed the board’s December 2025 vote to add Trump’s name to the facility, according to the Associated Press and NPR/KPBS.
The reporting distinguishes between canceled performances, postponed productions, and people leaving advisory positions. Those are different kinds of departures, so they should not be combined into one total.
Who withdrew after the February 2025 takeover?
Issa Rae
Comedian and actor Issa Rae was among the prominent early withdrawals reported after the board and leadership changes. NPR/KPBS’s roundup, published January 20, 2026, includes Rae among the artists who canceled Kennedy Center performances.

Hamilton
The producers of Hamilton withdrew the planned Kennedy Center run, which the Washington Post reported had been scheduled for March 3 through April 26, 2026. Producer Jeffrey Seller said the production was incompatible with what he called “a new spirit of partisanship” at the institution.
More than 20 productions canceled or postponed
By mid-February 2025, the Washington Post reported that more than 20 productions had been canceled or postponed. This was a time-limited count combining two categories, not a final tally of artists protesting or of all canceled concerts. The Kennedy Center said cancellations under its programming umbrella since February 12 were due to low sales or artist availability.

Who withdrew after the December 2025 naming vote?
Roundups published after the board’s vote to add Trump’s name reported further withdrawals from 2026 engagements. NPR/KPBS’s January 20, 2026 list includes singer-songwriter Sonia De Los Santos and banjo player Béla Fleck. The Associated Press, in a December 30, 2025 report, identified jazz group The Cookers and Doug Varone and Dancers as having canceled after the renaming.
These reports identify examples, not a complete status check of every scheduled engagement. They also describe departures by Ben Folds and Renée Fleming from advisory roles; leaving an advisory position is not the same as canceling a performance.

What reasons did artists give?
Objections to partisanship and politicization
Seller’s explanation for Hamilton centered on partisanship. NPR/KPBS reported that De Los Santos said she valued artistic freedom and had used it to uplift immigrant stories. Fleck said performing at the center “has become charged and political, at an institution where the focus should be on the music.” These are the stated views of particular artists, not explanations that can be applied to every withdrawal.
Financial and scheduling explanations
Not every canceled or postponed event was presented as a political protest. The Kennedy Center attributed cancellations under its programming umbrella since February 12, 2025, to low sales or artist availability, as reported by the Washington Post. That account is important context for interpreting the broader early tally.

Leadership’s response
Kennedy Center president Richard Grenell argued that last-minute cancellations showed performers had been unwilling to perform for people with whom they disagreed politically. Bluegrass musician Randy Barrett said the country needed more music and art, while also saying he respected those who chose to cancel and choosing to perform himself, according to the Associated Press. These are competing perspectives on the withdrawals, not a single established motive shared by all artists.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why there is no single reliable cancellation total
Published counts depend on what is being counted and when. A production may be postponed rather than canceled; one production can include multiple performances; and advisory departures do not represent canceled engagements. The Washington Post’s “more than 20” figure applies only to productions canceled or postponed by mid-February 2025. Later reporting adds examples from a second wave but does not establish a definitive cumulative total through October 2026.
